The Basics
It is in fact rather tricky to clearly define what a tree actually is. The generally accepted definition is: a plant with a long stem (or trunk) that has both branches and leaves and lives for more than two years. Of course, there are exceptions to these points!
Another way to define what makes a tree is to say ‘any plant which has a woody trunk that thickens each year by growing outwards’.
Interestingly, under this second definition, palms are not considered trees because their trunks do not grow outwards.
