About this ebook

Thomas Vega has traveled a twisting, perilous road from the deserts of the Middle East to the top of a lonely mountain on the outskirts of Tennessee.  As a soldier in the US Army, Tom helped save a lot of lives. But he paid a dear price.

Nightmares. Post traumatic stress. And the seeming inability to sustain a romantic relationship.

With his time in the service officially over, and his service dog, Bandit, as his only real companion, Thomas retreats from civilization and buys a small farm, hoping to at last find some peace in his life.

On a chance trip into town for some basic supplies, Thomas encounters a scuffle and immediately goes into hero mode. Thomas had intervened in many fights. But this one would change things forever.

India Gibson was doing alright for herself by all accounts. Her parents had died and left her a little money, and India resolved to use it to better herself, and to improve life for herself and her younger brother, Myles. Working nights so that she can take classes during the day, India keeps to herself and goes out of her way to stay out of trouble. But one night, trouble came knocking right at her front door as an unthinkable act of violence shatters her world.

India’s one saving grace is the man who came to her rescue. She’s drawn to him, but it seems like every force on earth is conspiring against them.

Will they overcome the odds and fight their way toward each other? Toward true love?

Or will they bury each other underneath all the baggage?

    Hero - Maggie C. Brynnon

    Chapter 1

FOR THE FIFTH NIGHT in a row, Thomas Vega couldn’t sleep.

In the middle of the night, just like the other nights, his eyes had opened as if he were coming out of some sort of hibernation. He struggled for a minute to adjust his vision against the pitch blackness of the night.

Slowly, he rolled over and took a glance at his alarm clock.

    It was 3 a.m.

He knew the chances of his being able to get back to sleep at that point were slim to none.

And so, resigned, he stretched out and slowly sat up. Then he stood, put on his slippers and robe, and made his way to the front of his house.

He walked past his kitchen on the way. He took one long look at the fridge, and contemplated grabbing a can of beer and bringing it with him. He was sure someone somewhere would have something to say about his drinking beer in the middle of the night. But he shrugged and picked up a can anyway.

After all, there wasn’t anyone up here that he needed to take orders from.

Besides, it could help make this whole actually-getting-some-sleep thing much easier, he rationalized.

A large German Shepherd followed him through the front door and out onto the porch, watching warily as he sat in a creaky old rocking chair with a multitude of paint chips flaking off of it. The dog sat on his haunches next to him and cocked his head to the side as if to say Again? He knew it was the middle of the night and he knew that meant bed, not sitting on the porch and drinking beer like it was the middle of a summer’s day.

Thomas looked down at the dog and his heart swelled a little. It’s OK, boy, he said as he patted the dog’s head lovingly. The dog seemed satisfied with this and settled in to lie at his feet.

At least someone might actually get some sleep around here.

Thomas took in a deep breath of the fresh mountain air and gave a satisfied look out across the stretch of land in front of him. He was beginning to really love this place, even though there was still a ton of work to do. He began to make a mental checklist of all the things that needed fixing, upgrading, painting, and clearing, not to mention all the things he would need to buy.

He let himself relax a little, told himself that there was plenty of time to figure all of that out. Yes, this was definitely the most content he’d been in a very long time. He permitted himself a small smile.

His smile quickly turned into a frown when he remembered the time. He was going to have to do something about this sleeping problem if this place was ever going to be up to par.

It occurred to him that he might need to talk to someone about it, someone professional, but he waved the thought off as soon as it popped into his head.

I know something else that might help, he thought to himself, feeling a familiar ache.

She popped into his mind ever so often, mostly on nights like this. He’d recall their time together with fondness. Then he’d wonder what she was doing with herself these days. And then, eventually, he’d settle into wishing she was there with him, and that’s when the aching would start. He wasn’t quite sure which of them had stopped calling first, though he knew it was likely him. He struggled to recall why. He could never come up with a good reason.

It would be silly of him to call her now after all this time, but that didn’t stop him from wanting to. He suspected that she could very quickly help him fix his sleeping problem.

And he could use a warm body in his bed every now and again.

A warm body other than Bandit’s.

As if hearing his thoughts, the dog’s ears perked up. He turned to fix his large brown eyes on Thomas.

Thomas nodded. OK, boy. You’ve made your point.

It was time to go inside and attempt one more time to get some sleep.

    SOMETHING EXPLODES nearby.

The sound is unbelievably loud and the ground shakes under his feet.

The heat wears on him like thick, heavy chains, made even more unbearable by all the gear he’s wearing.

Protective gear, he repeats to himself. He has to tell himself this in order to keep from peeling everything off, layer by layer, and exposing his bare flesh to the scorching sun.

He hits the ground, just as he’s done more times than he possibly could have counted. Then he begins to crawl,
