How to Manage Chaos and Changes in the Digital Age...

As a graduate student in a MBA program during 1996 to 1998, I had the chance to teach undergrad students on Introductory Marketing -- different introductory marketing theories, principles, and concepts. Students would learn how to write a marketing plan with market positioning, the four Ps (product, price, promotion and place) and action steps. However, I never understood how Marketing had evolved or revolutionized communication around world.
In 2000, I was studying for my doctoral program in Organizational Management, in e-Business. There was no e-Business program across Canada. I didn't want to leave my family and friends in Vancouver, BC. With a shoestring budget, I had to take a long-distance doctoral program in the United States, traveling back and forth for different conferences and seminars every few months to complete my doctoral program.
While I was studying for my PhD, I also took on part-time teaching jobs at local university and college campuses. I began to teach the first e-Marketing class at Simon Fraser University and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. I was the first and one of the youngest instructors there to teach on these topics. It was simply because many of the professors and instructors had little or no idea of what Internet Marketing was about.
To start an e-Marketing course from scratch, I designed the course curriculum and taught over 200 part-time and full-time students. It was an interesting and inspirational time. I got to teach and also learn from my students, who were doing different kinds of website evaluations and Internet Marketing projects. I believed one group of students even won a cash prize for their Internet Marketing project in an Entrepreneurship marketing plan contest. But of course, they spent the money on what they wanted, instead of using the money to build a real business venture. That made me start thinking... how can I contribute my knowledge and skills in the real business world. I decided to focus on doing marketing consulting and coaching because entrepreneurs are the ones who will truly make positive changes in our society.
In 2002, I wrote my first e-book on Internet Marketing. It was distributed through a small online book store specialized in selling e-books in the PDF format. I was very excited about my first e-book, even though (now I think back) the e-cover was poorly designed (by me, not exactly a professional e-cover because it was in very low resolution). The entire book was a little wordy and boring, with little professional editing or proofreading. Surprisingly, people did purchase and download it. I did sell some copies online. However, the e-book market was very small at that time. Both Internet Marketing and e-book publishing were still in the infancy
stage. You might find simple websites, direct marketing emails, and banner ads. That's about it!
After 20+ years, we have gone through the Internet evolution, the e-business evolution and the e-marketing evolution. Today, you can find many large Internet retailers and social media networks with sophisticated e-business models and new e-marketing techniques, from social media marketing, video marketing, to mobile marketing.
Getting connected anywhere and anytime is not just a dream now. It is the reality we live in every day. The mass market has adopted various Internet technologies, from desktops, laptops, tablets to smartphones. You can communicate and do your business virtually anywhere, anytime. The biggest challenge is... the more choices you have, the more confusing it is for you to make the right decision --
