      You have disappointed me, her mentor, the Professor had written in his letter. I gave into your care one of my most prized possessions, and what did you do? You treated it no more carefully than you would a cheap magazine or a sleazy tabloid paper. It was - is - an inestimable work, a volume of antiquity and value, and what did you do? You spattered it with droplets of coffee.

      It was tea, thought Merissa mournfully. Tea, Earl Grey, hot, just like Captain Picard used to drink in Star Trek.

      But that wouldn't make things any better... both tea and coffee were equally as damaging to fine books.

      I had hoped that when we met I could introduce you to certain delicate matters, and how they might be chronicled, in a atmosphere of peacefulness and harmony... But sadly, now, you leave me no option. I fear you must learn things the harder way, because regretfully you have let me down badly.

      Merissa shuddered. She'd wanted so much to win his approval. It was the reason for the books in the first place. Teach me! she'd pleaded in her letters. Tell me what to read, so that I may better do what I do... I'm ignorant but I so long to learn.

      She still wasn't quite sure how it had all begun. Some crazy girl talk at the health club. Someone had brought a bottle of wine. One of the women had been sporting some fierce looking marks on her backside, and the whole story had come out, how she went once a fortnight for 'correction'
