Lost in the Wilds - Rogue Medical
The Keys to Survival Are Preparation, Practice and Action
Preparation
––––––––
Action must be taken in advance of the incident; a mental pep talk does not suffice for proper planning. These preparations are lifestyle choices.
––––––––
Physically
––––––––
Your survival may depend on your physical fitness. This does not mean you have to be a CrossFit champion, weight lifter, runner, or biker. It means you need to have the strength to carry yourself so someone else does not have to.
In order to survive an event, you may be required to:
Hike long distances (greater than 10 miles)
Climb ridge tops, inclines, over rocks and boulders
Hunt and track game
Carry a fellow crewmember a distance to ensure their survival
––––––––
Easy Survival Preparation Physical Fitness Routine
If you can’t do everything, do as many as you can and work up to it. If you get bored, double or triple it. Physical Fitness does not require expensive gym memberships and trainers.
––––––––
50 jumping jacks
30 push ups
50 squats
30 crunches
30 high knees
30 leg lifts
1 minute plank
1 minute wall sit
1 mile walk 5 times a week
––––––––
Mentally
––––––––
If you have the opportunity and time take a Survival course, and read books, study manuals and field guides. Don’t get caught up in fads or marketing systems used to make someone else money (Paleo, CrossFit, zombie squads, etc.) Often the simplest of actions and items will make a difference in a survival situation.
––––––––
Emotionally
––––––––
Do not rely on others to save your life, they may not always have your best interest in mind, and you will actively have to make sound decisions if you are alone and hope to survive.
Do not fall into emotional traps (excessive eating, sleeping, or despair) or blaming one another if you are in a group.
Do not lose yourself in a power struggle, it doesn’t matter who the boss is as long as everyone has food, water, shelter and SURVIVES.
Equal sharing of work load in groups or prioritizing work on your own will allow you to complete objectives faster and offer better rewards.
Arguing, bickering, complaining and blaming will lead you in a massive circle with nothing accomplished. You will be left with lost daylight, time and a lack of supplies. More importantly you will remain in the same place and considerably reduce your chance of rescue and reduce your ability to survive.
––––––––
Practice
––––––––
Constantly review survival skills and use of tools and equipment before your life depends on it.
Practice makes perfect.
Always know your equipment.
Open your kit if you carry one and inspect it carefully. Replace anything that is past its prime and will not function as intended.
Know how to use each piece of equipment.
––––––––
Action
––––––––
When an emergency situation arises the time to learn is gone and the time for actions has arrived.
Poor planning leads to poor outcomes, increased injuries and death.
Proper planning, training and education can lead to better results including survival and rescue.
It is impossible to be prepared for every emergency but knowing the basics will lead to better decisions and survival.

One of the most widely used and known acronyms is:
S-U-R-V-I-V-A-L
S - Size up situation, surroundings, equipment, physical condition.
U - Undue haste makes waste, being lazy or unconcerned leads to being unprepared.
R - Remember where you are, noting your location even when lost allows for a good anchor point to scout from and return
