      Chapter 1

      Tiegan stopped applying her makeup in the mirror and frowned. "We’re going to a party that starts at one in the morning?"

      What, can’t handle it? her roommate teased from the other room.

      The girl had her there. With her recent breakup, Tiegan had sworn to get out more and be adventurous. The only problem? She didn’t feel adventurous. Objectively, she saw her own long brown hair, smooth white skin, brown eyes, and high cheeks in the mirror, but nothing about her inner self felt cool or beautiful at the moment. All she could do was put on makeup, don her favorite top, and… fake it until she made it.

      She sighed.

      Looking down, at least her cleavage was strong and on point tonight. Only question was, when a guy started staring, could she hold back from throwing her drink? Her cheating ex had left her with a bitter tendency to get angry at leering men.

      In a way both fortunate and unfortunate, that wouldn’t be a problem at this party. A short drive later, Tiegan realized where it was her roommate was taking her. Is this another one of your, um—

      Yes, it’s a house party with my friends, her roommate told her. Terry was an out lesbian, and her circle of friends was basically comprised of the town’s gay demographic. There would be no tall, handsome, muscular men leering at her tonight—key phrase being not leering at her. There would be plenty of great men… interested in each other.

      She held a polite smile. Cool. She nodded once or twice at nothing. Cool cool cool.

      Aw, don’t do that, Terry complained. It’ll be fun.

      Tiegan truly gave in. Alright, yeah, I’ll try to have a good time.

      "Good. And don’t even think about that cheating asshole."

      I wasn’t until you brought him up, Tiegan lied, falling quiet. The sky was dark, but backlit by a hint of moonlight, and the orange streetlamps rolled by as she gazed out the window. It was one in the morning, but she’d been sleeping in so late the last few weeks that she was just reaching full energy for the night. She nodded at nothing again, telling herself that maybe she could find fun if she just kept focused on maintaining a good mood.

      The row of houses rested atop a small hill which angled steeply up their yards; she’d been to this particular place before, but only once, and hammered. Looking out the car window as Terry parked, she recalled details of the breakup fight that had happened up and down the cement steps that led up to the front door.

      Oh yeah, her roommate commented lamely. I forgot.

      It’s fine, Tiegan said with a wince. That’s over. It’s all over. Not gonna let it get me down.

      Terry patted her shoulder. Good.

      A terrible thought occurred to her. "He’s not at this party is he?"

      Absolutely not! He’s not welcome. Not at all.

      Tiegan let out a relieved breath and finally got out of the car. It was chilly, but she didn’t feel a thing in her adrenaline-filled extremities. The hike down the sidewalk and up the cement steps was uneventful, though, and they moved past several lounging smokers and into the house proper.

      The first room was well-lit and as spacious as off-campus housing could manage; the bulk of it, however, was dominated by a pool table. Six or seven alternative girls and guys stood around it, shooting and drinking beer. They didn’t acknowledge the new entrants, but, then, Terry really didn’t hang out with the tattoo and piercings crowd.

      One stood out. Next to that crowd, but not exactly fully participating, a tall girl with light brown skin, long black hair, and wide brown eyes seemed to be doing her best to smile and nod along with their conversation. Her white dress seemed slightly out of place, not just among the alternative crowd, but in the rundown college house entirely; her slender figure and large chest made up for it, though. She pulled it off completely.

      Following Terry around into the next room, Tiegan let her eyes drift to remain on that out-of-place girl, her limbs still tingling from the stress of adrenaline. The girl caught her glance a moment
