About this ebook

Twin females who can't be separated; twin males who don't get along... No one ever said mating was easy.

Veronique and Vanessa have never been apart. Wolf twins are often close, but none closer than these two sisters. When outgoing Veronique finds her mate and shy Vanessa's is nowhere in sight, the pair concoct a wild plan to stay together.

Berne and Barden have never seen eye-to-eye. Being in the same room for more than a few hours usually leads to a fight. But no fight they've had before can compare to the one that's coming when Barden finds his mate.

    Prologue

Sounds intruded on Vanessa's sleep. She forced her eyes open, though she wanted to stay curled with her twin, sharing heat in the den they'd appropriated.

We have to start moving soon. Though they were hungry and exhausted, chapped, injured, and—in Veronique's case—fevering, every minute wasted was a minute closer to death.

    She shook her sister's shoulder.

    The uninjured one, of course.

Vanessa buried the guilt at seeing her sister's bandaged arm deep down inside and called out softly to her twin. Veronique? You have to get up.

    She moaned.

I think we'll reach the bottom this evening. Vanessa didn't promise that they would find shelter there. For all she knew, it would be a valley with only mountains in every direction. If so, she had no idea where they would go next.

Follow the water. There are always people near water.

But will they be people we're safe with?

Only the Night Mother knew that for certain.

Loose stones and frozen dirt shifted at the entrance to their den. Vanessa covered Veronique's mouth, just as her sister started to answer. Veronique's eyes went wide and wild, and her trembling became more pronounced.

The next shift of earth was closer, sending the slide down to the floor across from them.

They've found us. Vanessa had heard sounds of pursuit on and off for the last four days. She'd hoped they'd finally lost the hunters, but it seemed luck was—as usual, of late—not in their corner.

Vanessa drew her hand away from Veronique's face and turned slowly toward the opening. Snuffling sounds got louder, and she spied a snout peeking past her camouflage of limbs and leaves.

They're using dogs. A wry smile twisted her lips up, and she shifted. I may be new to this and a female, but I am a wolf, with all the intelligence and prowess of a wolf. No dog is going to get the better of me, even in the half-shifted form females take.

The dog pushed through the cover and started down the steep incline. Veronique covered her mouth with a shaking hand.

Vanessa didn't waste any time. She vaulted at him from below, aiming for his unprotected throat.

Another body hit her solidly, knocking Vanessa to her side. She scrambled up, only to be knocked back again. A huge paw settled on her chest, pinning her.

    Veronique screamed.

    Easy, pup.

Vanessa startled and looked toward the opening.

A nude human male crouched where the dog had been before.

Not a dog. A wolf! I attacked one of our own.

Vanessa forced herself to shift back, panting under the pressure exerted by the wolf pinning her to the ground.

Veronique sobbed, then started coughing harshly.

Let her up, Brand, the one in human form ordered.

The wolf backed away, grumbling warnings she only half understood in human form.

The other helped her to sitting and started checking her for injuries.

Veronique needs help, she interrupted him, pointing at her sister to emphasize the point.

He nodded. Brand, check the other pup. Then call in our men. We need to get them off this mountain before the next storm rolls in.

He didn't bother to shift. One moment, he was snuffling at Veronique, then he was climbing the incline, reporting back to his alpha in a myriad of vocalizations. Once he was outside, he let out a series of howls.

A call to gather and hunt.

    Vanessa gasped. No. The hunters.

Veronique shot them a panicked look.

The one still with them snorted. We took care of them a week ago. His fangs peeked past his upper lip, a sign of his anger.

    But I heard—

In the distance, she heard answering howls. No, others spreading the call.

    Probably us searching for you.

Her cheeks heated in embarrassment. All this time, help had been a shout away, and they never knew it.

We found the bag you discarded. That's when we knew you were close.

The dirty clothing. We couldn't see any reason to carry it. We tried to hide it, but I suppose you could smell it.

Yes. We did. That gave us hope we'd almost given up on.

He unbuckled a pack from his shoulders
