    Inducing a Dream

    By M. Travis Leake

Kyna felt the sweat form on her brow. Hands affixed to her skyke grips, she could not indulge herself the luxury of wiping--every second counted. A lock of hair slipped out from its resting place underneath her helmet, whipping as a flag in a hurricane; the wind succumbed to her passing. Rolling hills on the horizon came into view. Seasonal workers traced her path with pointed fingers as she crossed over the Nor Cal vineyards below.

The optical display responded to her vocal command to engage; a translucent wafer twisted down from inside her helmet, stopping as it reached her right eye’s field of vision. The blip was still there. She hadn’t been able to shake him the entire race, the distance between them had shrunk even more.

Shifty, I’ve reduced altitude, but number four’s still not responding, Kyna said. The com panel flashed across her field of vision as she accelerated across a low sloping hill.

    Bummer, Ky, Shifty replied.

She approached another hillside, made the necessary corrections to avoid hitting a cluster of old-growth trees
