Restoring Self - Cornelius Walker, Jr

    Introduction

After researching about the issues in the black community I had an epiphany. Maybe the reason why African-Americans have such an issue is because they do not know who they are. The black culture has suffered from identity crisis in America. This book is to spark the interest into researching who they are and where they come from. You will come across few examples of misconception in everyday life.

You may come across asking yourself, why is the black family structure the way it stands today? Why aren’t the school systems teaching more Black and African History? Why haven’t my parents told me who I was or why didn’t I ask them? The answers to those questions are all here for you to begin to unlock the doors of your heritage. I thought about myself while writing this book.

Taking time to research the problems in the Black community has made me stumble upon identification. You have to be interested in learning who you are and where you came from. The first step to success is investing in yourself. You and your lineage is the key to going toward the answer door. Many African-Americans have lost a sense of self. They do not know who they are and what purpose they bring. In this book you will get introduced to the start of your own journey of knowing thyself.

There are several mentions of Black Civilization starting in Africa. Blacks were also the first ones here in America. These were the indigenous people of the country. The natives were black. Most Americans came from Africa and inhabited the land.

In this book you will find out how identity affects family dynamics. How the family structure is created. You will also read how religion has an effect on identity. Continue reading you will find out that mental and physical attributes coincide with individuality.

    Back 2 Your Roots

    Identity

African-Americans in the United States are in serious trouble. They have an issue of identity crisis. They are missed informed of who they are. When you look around to see a culture in the black community, you come across a phenomenon. They do not know who they are anymore.

Identity is a person's conception and expression of their own self-identity and others' individuality or group affiliations. To be black in America today lies at the complex intersection of race and class. African-Americans have integrated themselves into nothingness.

Blacks all around the country have lost their identity and it is time to take it back. African-Americans need to realize that the American Dream was not meant for black people. The African-American community has tried to mix itself into American society. The black men and black women need to come together and make the changes to their culture.

Moreover, they need to look back into self and find what makes them who they are. In this book the talks of black men, women, and family will be discussed.

In addition the effect of the workplace, school, religious beliefs, and community as a whole in the black family will be talked about. Losing your identity can be the end of your own personal culture. Not knowing who you are and where you come from is detrimental to your heritage.

Without your identity you are no one. It was a saying that goes a jack of all trades is a master of none. So with that being said trying everyone else’s culture but yours is beyond useless.

If you lose sight of yourself to gain something else than ask yourself what do you have? Most African-Americans start from the low economic lifestyles in life. When they get a chance to live a better life through economic improvement some forget where they came from.

They live the life by the upgrade they required. This is where the identity begins to go away. There is a large generation in today’s time that does not have a sense of self. Lack of knowledge of self will destroy you.

Family dynamics change from growing up with struggle and being humble to being silver spoon fed. The real reality is that having the opportunity to financially stable, sometimes leave morals in question. It is a difference in appreciating values in an upper class status household than a working middle class household. You cannot buy emotions and sentiment with money.

When it comes to more of the working middle class families they always try to push education. But what is wrong with that is some cannot afford to send them to better schools.

Most blacks in America today are public school educated and therefore overlook colleges that they do not know about. A race is described having one genetic trait unique to one specific group of people.

Family is important in societies. In all societies family is needed. The quote It takes a village to raise a child is not an understatement. When the mother and father are not there to teach a child learns from school. Yet, with the money that people make in a wealthy home sometimes comes less family oriented activities.

The role of the father is a good place to start. How can a family really achieve the best environment for a child when he or she does not have both parents? The family needs structure. Money cannot buy that. It is imperative that teaching the children their culture is done. In the home is where all learning begins.

In addition, teaching them right culture will prevent identity thief. This is why a parents leadership and life lessons is key to not only having a successful home but also a flourishing society. Mothers have a firsthand in natural development towards their children.

So they have to be the first to bring background into the child’s life. Being able to establish aestheticism from the start will only help family as a whole for the legacy to live on.

You can destroy the black family structure by destroying the head of the house first, the black man. Then empowering his black woman and making her the head of the household. Now you have this gender confusion in the black family. This is a trick to have the culture stripped away from you. Do not let this happen to your family.

Financial capability in the home is a must. Without the proper upbringing in society the identity of the African-American household will continue to fail. When the father and the mother each know their culture and embrace growth the household will not fall. Strong family structure is the first step to not losing your identity.

No one talks about ethnic violence and increasing patterns of residential segregation. You won’t see this on the local news stations. The community itself will not handle these issues. In today’s time television entertains different personalities. On MTV, they have a show called Catfish. The host of the show sets out on a quest to see who is not telling the truth about themselves on online sites.

On the internet people are not saying who they really are. Identities are made up and forged. People are not telling others about their true self. You have to question the psychology of the whole thing. Why are they hiding themselves and their identity? Do they not know who they are or they do not want to be who they are? Does my identity change when I am on Facebook?

These questions are not just asked in the African-American community. But the focus on them has gone from crisis to catastrophe. Social identity categorizes
