About this ebook

It’s time at last for the Lumberjack Ball! Time to match the participants with a Lumberjack for nightly mandatory exercise...

Miranda Zane’s likely choice doesn’t make her excited, he makes her sick. The two doctors in charge aren’t likely to let the crude lumberjack put another paw on her. Especially, now they’ve realized they want her for themselves.

“Yep, they’re eating dinner now.” Andrei paused. “Look, Carter, there's something I need to tell you.”

“Good, because I need to talk to you as well,” Carter said.

The two men were quiet as they walked to the room. Neither spoke until they'd closed and locked the door and were seated across from each other in the small sitting room.

“What is it?” Carter asked, his voice wary.

“You know patient eight? The stunner with the pale skin and black hair?” Andrei asked. His voice was raspy, almost breathless.

Carter wasn't sure where Andrei was going with this.

“Yes, of course. Patient eight, Miranda Zane of Portland. What about her?” Carter replied coolly.

“You're going to think I'm nuts, but I think she’s the one.”

Andrei paused to let his words sink in.

Carter felt his hands tighten into fists. He'd seen the arousal, but he hadn't expected this. Andrei was a playboy, but for him to call her “the one...” Those words weren't in his vocabulary.

“I'm sorry?” Carter asked, shaking his head slightly as if he hadn't heard correctly.

“Carter, I know it sounds completely crazy, but I swear to God, I'm not making this up. While I was out there talking to her, looking at her, my bear was trying to take over. It was all I could do not to transform and claim her right there in front of everyone.”

Carter moved from his seat so fast that Andrei never saw it coming. He grabbed his best friend by his shirt collar and tie and with a growl heaved him against the wall.

“You’re lying. My bear told me she was ours. If she’s anyone’s mate, she’s mine!”

Andrei’s eyes grew wide, and then a deep growl left his throat.

“Carter, let go of me now, or you’ll regret it.”

Andrei might not be the head alpha of the Kodiak clan, but Carter knew that if he challenged him for the role of leader, Andrei would win.

The smart part of Carter’s brain kicked in, and he released his friend.

The two men stared at each other, breathing heavily.

Andrei was the first to speak, his eyes growing wide with comprehension.

“Holy xxx, dude, are you telling me you heard your bear’s voice as well?”

Carter nodded.

“Damn, then maybe we need to figure this out,” Andrei said, his crooked, confident smile returning for a moment. “This calls for a drink.”

Dr. Carter Rockwell stepped forward to the center of the room. He couldn’t look directly at the table where his audience was sitting because he couldn’t bear the idea of seeing a look of disgust on Miranda Zane’s face.

The way she’d lashed out at him, out of the blue outside of the commune’s main house still left a sour feeling in his throat.

All he could think was that she’d finally realized what he’d hope she hadn’t noticed, namely, the stirring of his cock as he’d held her in his lap in the Jeep.

She’d been weak and dehydrated and still recovering from passing out, so it had clearly just sunk in after she slipped on the steps. He’d try to help her up, he’d placed his hands around her waist, but she’d reacted like he was slime, the worst kind of perverted filth

He was too humiliated by the memory.

He couldn’t blame her. He’d been totally unprofessional. Why the fuck had he not been able to control himself?

What was it about that woman?

As if to remind Carter as well as the group of newcomers present why the good doctor had just walked to the center of the room, the commune’s new general manager, Carmina, stepped in front of him and spoke to the group of newly arrived women.

Her tone was annoyed and flustered. The women had arrived two hours ahead of schedule and Carmina and her staff had been caught unprepared.

Like I said, ladies, Dr. Carter Rockwell, who is the co-head researcher for this project, has a few words for you while you await your dinner.

Carter glanced over his shoulder, towards the rear of the hall. He half hoped Andrei would appear and step up for the job of entertaining the new arrivals. But there was no sign of him. Carmina moved back to the rear wall and waited expectantly. Carter gritted his teeth and took a deep breath.

Turning his body to face the assembled group, he took care to not look at the beauty seated on the far left. He set a tight smile on his face and focused on one of the picture windows looming behind the ladies. The verdant green of the overhanging pines calmed his nerves. He began.

    Welcome to Kodiak Commune, ladies.

Behind the women, Andrei appeared in the doorway, pausing as his eyes adjusted to the interior light.

Carter felt a rush of relief.

Well, that’s enough out of me, Carter said with a touch of his old self in his voice. Ladies, you’re in for a treat. Dr. Andrei Fedorov will take it from here now.

Carter felt a rush of guilty pleasure, like a naughty schoolboy who’d just cheated on an exam. He half expected Carmina to come out of the back, roaring her displeasure and grabbing him by his ear so she could rap his knuckles with a ruler.

I’d like to see her try, Carter thought.

Carmina was just an annoyance, with her mandated position as Commune Manager and her little daily reports to the money people funding their operation. He’d had no choice about giving her the power that she had, but he’d be damned if he’d let her boss him around.

He was the Alpha, not her.

As soon as Andrei realized that he was on, he plastered his megawatt smile to his mouth, his bright white teeth almost sparkling against his tanned complexion. Welcome, all of you, to Kodiak Commune, Andrei’s voice boomed. He stretched his hands out then raised them up as a preacher, symbolically embracing his new flock.

Andrei, you’re so full of yourself, Carter muttered under his breath.

Carter’s comment hadn’t been loud enough for any of the humans to hear. But for Andrei, a fellow bear shifter, Carter might as well had used a megaphone. Andrei now had his back to Carter and he very discreetly put his hand behind his well-tailored suit-jacket and gave Carter the bird.

Carter laughed as tension over the incident on the Jeep melted away. He leaned back against the smooth logs on the wall, and settled in to watch Andrei, the egomaniac, at work.

Welcome to Kodiak Commune, Andrei repeated. Then he paused, as if waiting for applause. But it didn't come. Unperturbed, he continued, his voice growing even louder. You are the cream of the crop, the lucky few worthy enough to be chosen. You should all be very proud that you’ve made it here. Give yourselves a hand.

There was a trickle of applause at best. Carter wanted to laugh. The idea that his old friend, the great lady-killer Alpha bear stud Andrei Fedorov, could be a flop at anything was just too funny.

Forgetting about his former concerns, Carter glanced at the table to check if patient number eight was part of the unimpressed gaggle. But, to his disappointment, patient eight was actually paying attention. She was sitting bolt upright in her chair, hands folded on her lap, an expression of great concentration on her face. She was the exception.

Andrei began talking about the great and wonderful things that were about to happen for all of them, but he seemed to be talking only to Miranda Zane.

Carter took in the rest of the motley crew. All of them were checked out, showing no sign that they even knew Andrei was there. They were draped around the table in various states of dishevelment. One of the ladies had pulled up the empty chair beside her so that she could sit parallel to the table and prop up her leg. As Carter watched, she leaned forward, her lank hair falling over her weary face as she pulled off her shoes to rub at a painful spot on the ball of her foot.

Another woman a few seats over had hoisted a large duffle bag onto the table. She pawed through it, scattering pieces of clothing as she dug for whatever it was she needed. Another of the young, plus-sized new arrivals hadn’t even had the good grace to stay in her seat. She had walked to the large picture windows that flanked the front of the building. She stretched an arm high, holding her cell phone up, trying to find a signal that Carter knew wasn’t there—not on any frequency any of the ladies’ cell phone carriers would know about, anyway.

His attention returned to the table, and Carter laughed again. Not because these women were clearly beyond exhausted after their grueling trip, but because the pompous doctor in the thousand-dollar suit couldn’t say anything to grab their
