Berry Berry Special - Stefanie Noonan
Mason
Sometimes it’s hard to feel special when you’re the oldest kid in a large family and have a giant head that looks like a mushroom. The grownups expect big kids
to be less kid and more big because little brothers and sisters watch everything you do.
It’s hard to feel loved when the arms that held you are busy holding others. It’s also hard to get attention when your siblings out-cute you.
That’s how Harper felt at least.
It’s not fair, thought Harper. I get to be born with a strawberry birthmark the size of my head and they get to be born with a perfect, pink snout and gorgeous, green tentacles!
To make matters worse, Harper’s mom expected so much.
Harper, bring me Snoutszilla’s bottle! Harper, watch Squidsy while I take a shower,
she said.
(Harper didn’t like this big kid
thing one bit.)
If it weren’t for Harper,
said Harper’s mom talking on the phone. I don’t know what I would do—what a great helper!
Suddenly Harper felt terrible.
(Not for listening in, but for all the cruel things Harper had imagined doing to Squidsy’s tentacles and to Snoutszilla’s snout.)
Harper tiptoed out of the room with a giant smile. It was white, bright, and contagious. It was the kind of smile that only a big kid
with a mouth full of teeth, who knows how berry, berry special they are, can smile!
Carson could only dream of wearing Limeberry StrutZ® running shoes like the kids at school. Any bird who was anyone strutted around in them.
They’re squish-tastic! Like walking on a puffy cloud,
said pretty, pink Payton. Watch this: When I lift my wings, my shoes play music!
No they don’t,
said fluff-ball Carson. "That’s just the sound of your wings
fluttering."
So no!
squawked Payton. It’s not my wings. It’s the shoes. They’re magical!
They’re just shoes,
said Carson.
Just shoes?
asked Payton. "‘Only those in the know have the nuclear glow.’" Payton quoted the famous Limeberry StrutZ® tagline.
Carson moaned. There was no denying that all the chicks and roosters who wore StrutZes® did have a special blue glow about them. Carson was too smart to believe that the small, rounded berry symbol stamped onto the side of the right shoe was capable of creating a nuclear glow even if the commercials claimed it did.
You’re just jelly,
giggled Payton, "because you don’t got the
