    Chapter One - The Beginning

    2014

The young couple walked through the park in the centre of the city, pushing a toddler in a pushchair. It was a beautiful, warm summer’s day and the couple laughed and pointed out various interesting sights to the small, golden-curled boy. Tall, green trees and colourful shrubs lined the cement path under the cerulean blue of the cloudless sky.

The child turned his head to see older boys playing with toy boats at the pond-side and laughed aloud, as a man with two large dogs came striding by and was almost lifted off his feet, by the collies who had seen another dog in the distance and wanted to investigate him.

Doggies! he uttered to the pride of his doting parents. He watched the man and large dogs’ progress with amused, large blue eyes.

That’s right Samuel! They’re dogs. Just like the ones in your picture book. What a smart boy you are! his mother, a plain woman with mousey-coloured hair and kind, grey eyes smiled indulgently at her son.

Maybe, one day when we get a house of our own, we’ll get you a puppy, Sam! his round-faced father beamed at the thought.

Don’t make promises you can’t keep, Gerald! admonished the plain woman in a bleak voice. She was weary of their continual struggle on a low income and despite her love for her husband of five years; she worried that they would never rise up out of their current social conditions. And don’t call him Sam, his name is Samuel! she added in a sharp voice.

Gerald Davies nodded with a little tight smile, but inside he felt rebellious and angry. Why did Betty always have to spoil, everything!

When they were first dating and just married, she had faith in his ability to go upward in life, but recently that had faded into a barely tolerated disillusionment. If it wasn’t for the boy, Sam, he would consider divorcing her and becoming single again!

Betty was feeling familiar emotions of anger and hopelessness. She had hoped when she married Gerald that her old life of quiet despair and loneliness would be filled with this new love and feeling of being part of a couple. She had been placed in an orphanage when she was only a few days old, as her teenage mother was unable to cope with a baby and she had grown up amongst, a never-ending revolving cycle of babies and young children entering the children’s home and then leaving, when they were finally adopted.

Betty had grown into a lanky, plain girl with mousey hair and protruding pale eyes and although she had wished with all her tiny heart for a loving family, to adopt her and welcome her into their warm midst; it had only happened once and that had been a disaster!

The Jenkins had been a seemingly happy couple in their thirties, good-looking and out-going. They had been vetted by the adoption agency and passed with flying colours, but they had a secret agenda that no-one knew except Betty, as time went on - they were both heavy drinkers and frequently became violent and aggressive with each other and this adoption was their last resort, before they divorced.

Poor little Betty tried to play the part of the perfect daughter, to please her new parents. She smiled and laughed on cue and tried to make herself, as helpful as possible. She accepted their cuddles and kisses with eagerness and tried to behave as well-behaved, as she could and not annoy them. Meanwhile, her parents drank and fought every night, while Betty lay in her new bed, shaking. Was this really what all families were like?

After three terrible months, a social worker discovered what was going on, when she found the Jenkins one morning, both hung-over from a drinking binge, furniture broken and numerous whiskey bottles empty and Betty too frightened, to come out of her bedroom.

Betty was summarily taken from the Jenkin’s care and returned to the children’s home. Her dreams of a loving home and caring parents, lost forever. Now her only hope was one day having her own husband and children.

Betty left the orphanage without a backward glance, at eighteen, after completing a secretarial course at a local college. She had been determined to succeed and she had topped the class with her marks. She was an avid reader of fashion magazines and when she got her first secretarial position with a firm of accountants, she had her hair styled in the latest fashion and splurged on new, modish clothes.

While she was never destined to be a beauty, Betty who later had a new job in the Tax Department, soon caught the eye of a slightly older accountant called Gerald Davies. She decided then and there, that he would make an ideal husband and she pursued him relentlessly, until Gerald flattered by the young woman’s interest succumbed to her admiration and they got engaged.

Three months later, they were married and a slightly drunk and bewildered Gerald remarked to a guest at their wedding, I guess I’m a lucky man to have such a great girl, but I don’t really know, how it happened!

They both had hoped for a happy, prosperous life, but somehow the success they wanted, never quite appeared. They still lived in the rundown one-bedroom apartment that Gerald had lived in, when they first met. It was meant to be a ‘stop-gap’ only, but somehow, it had become their permanent home.

Gerald had been disappointed to find that Betty was not a passionate woman in bed, as he hoped, but she was a good housekeeper and determined to make their marriage succeed.

Betty worked hard at her job, until she became pregnant with Samuel, but somehow, their meagre incomes always seemed to match their outgoings. Complications with Betty’s pregnancy also cost them their savings, to pay
