    This book is based on F.G. Groom’s The Grooms of Harefield (Tasmania, Australia, 1985), which was reworked and added to extensively by Yvonne McKissock. Her work was in turn reworked into its present form and amplified by new research in Britain in 2015 by Anthony Adolph, a professional genealogist and broadcaster, author of books including Tracing Your Family History and In Search of our Ancient Ancestors.

    The earliest generations of the Groom family were in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, England whose parish records survive from 1564. Anthony Adolph researched wills and parish registers for the earlier history on the Groom family in this book. Agnes Groume 1580 had written a will stating her children. One of these children is William Grome born about 1550. John Rose Groome is a descendant of William Grome.

    John Rose Groome was baptised 1655 in Stoke Poges and later married Hannah Hanking in Harefield, Middlesex in 1678 and had 9 children. Therefore another 3 generations of Groom family in Harefield, Middlesex.

    John Rose Groome had a son Henry Groom and he married Sarah Hinds in 1728 Hillingdon, Middlesex. Henry and Sarah had 10 children.

    One of these children Henry Groom was baptised 1735 in Harefield and later married Sarah Row in Harefield in 1759. Henry and Sarah had 5 children.

    Their eldest son James Groom made the move south into London and married Ann Blanch in 1783. James and Ann had 7 children: Francis Henry Groom was born in 1784, James Foster Groom was born in 1786, Sarah Ann Groom was born in 1789, John Groom was born in 1791 and 3 other children died in childhood. Francis, Sarah and John their families are documented in this book.

    This book details the family of James Foster Groom descendants in which includes his two sons James Charles Groom and Francis Groom as early settlers in Tasmania, Australia.
    Other families which are documented in this book are the Minnitt family and Wright family.
    Francis Groom son’s Warner Ottley Groom and James Henry Groom migrated to Fiji in 1869 as early settlers. Warner married and had no children. James and his partner Moli Tenai ( Fijian Chief’s daughter ) had 5 children. At least 98% of James Henry Groom descendants are documented in BOOK 1

      A Note from the Author

      Introduction

      I have been very interested for twenty years plus in compiling my family history. I have met very interesting people on the way. I have published in 2009 "Jennings Family of Tonga my grandfather’s side of the family. Also in 2009 I published Harman Family from Yorkshire to Fiji".

      Both these books have documented family descendants of Tonga and Fiji to 2008 in the near future will be republished into Ebooks.

      I have always been very interested over twenty years plus on my grandmother’s Groom side of the family in Fiji. There has never been any documentation wriiten on the Fiji Groom family. All the documentation I have noticed over the years and via internet have been on our Groom in Tasmania, Australia and England. In Tasmania when James Henry Groom is mention it mainly states family in Fiji. Now I feel our family is recognised in the descendants of the Groom family of Tasmania and England.

      The Groom family of Buckinghamshire, London, Tasmania, Fiji is a collation of the 17 generations of descendants from 1550 Stoke Poges, Harefield, London, Tasmania, Australia and Fiji. These two ebooks outlines the history and family genealogy of 17 generations from Agnes and son Wylliam Grome, 1550, Stoke Poges, a town in Buckinghamshire, England.

      It has a detail record of births, deaths and marriages and photos of descendants up to 2015

      I have separated the book into 2 ebooks.

      Book 1: Fiji 7 Generations

      Jorel Underwood born 2011 with his 7 x, greatgrandfather James Foster Groom

      Fiji Descendants: James Henry Groom went to Fiji with his brother Warner in 1869 as early settlers. Warner married and had no descendants. James Henry has over 90 pages of descendants. I have documented births, marriages and deaths of about 98 % of descendants in Fiji. The family is mainly scattered from Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain, Europe and USA.

      Book 2: 10 Generations

      James Henry Groom left Fiji and went back to Harefield, Tasmania with his health deteriorating and to be with his siblings. His grandfather James Foster Groom 1786 in London has been well documented in the book also his ancestoral family -James Groom 1760, Henry Groom 1735, Henry Groom 1710, John Rose Groom 1655, John Groom 1620, Nycholas Grome 1573, William Grome 1550 and his mother Agnes Groume.

      The Groom Family in England

      10 Generations of Descendants

      Chapter 1

      Agnes Groume

      The earliest generations of this family were in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, whose parish registers survive from 1564. The earliest ancestor was probably:

      … Grome

      He lived in Stoke Poges and we know of him only because there exists a will for Agnes Groume, widow, which was written on 23 October 1580 and proved on 2 January 1580 in the Archdeaconry Court of Buckingham. Her place of residence is not stated, but as the other Gro(u)me wills of this period are from Stoke Poges it is entirely reasonable to assume that this one was too. She left, as far as can be deciphered from the old handwriting:

      To Mary my daughter a new cobbrode (cupboard?) a bedstead a mattress a covering a blanket and bolster 3 pairs of flaxen sheets a pair of harden(?) sheets

      Owing unto Mary my daughter the ______ of _______

      To Mary my daughter 4 pewter plates the second brass pot and new bottle

      To Alice my daughter 3 pairs of flaxen sheets 2 pairs of harden sheets and a bed as it is furnished

      To Elizabeth my daughter 3 pairs of flaxen sheets 2 pairs of harden sheets pewter and brass the next unto that which Mary had

      To Elizabeth one black cowe(?) called Fill(?) payde

      To Mary the calf that was of the brindle cow I had

      I give to every one of my daughters 2 quarterns(?) of barley in remederation(?) of the sheep(?)

      I give to Hewstes (Eustace?) Rewell my son-in-law 2 quarterns of barley

      To my daughter at Checgilly(?) one quarter of barley and one bushel of malt

      To William Grome and Joan Brown the lease of Wm Gudridge his land

      To my daughter Elizabeth the cofer next unto the bedstead

      I will that William, Jone, Alice and Elizabeth my children shall keep this my house together Also if it please god to call any of these my children to his mercy then their legacies shall be divided among the rest then living

      The rest of my goods unbequeathed I give to William my son and Joan my daughter whom I make my sole executors these being overseers Thomas Asher and Robert Walles witnesses William Barnes and Thomas Clayton

      We can say, then, that they had children:

      1. William Grome (see below)

      2. Joan Grome, married to …. Brown. She and her brother William were to share ‘the lease of Wm Gudridge his land’ under their mother Agnes’s will, and they were also to be Agnes’s executors.

      3. Mary Grome (to receive ‘a new cobbrode (cupboard?) a bedstead a mattress a covering a blanket and bolster 3 pairs of flaxen sheets a pair of harden(?) sheets…[and] 4 pewter plates the second brass pot and new bottle’ [and]… the calf that was of the brindle cow I had’).

      4. Alice Grome (to receive ‘3 pairs of flaxen sheets 2 pairs of harden sheets and a bed as it is furnished’)

      5. Elizabeth Grome (to receive ‘3 pairs of flaxen sheets 2 pairs of harden sheets pewter and brass the next unto that which Mary had…[and] one black cowe(?) called Fill(?) payde’ and ‘the cofer next unto the bedstead’)

      6. A daughter Grome married to ‘Hewstes (Eustace?) Rewell’, mentioned in Agnes’s will, to have ‘2 quarterns of barley’ and his children to have ‘an ewe sheep’.

      7. ‘Checgilly’ (probably Cecilly) Grome, to have ‘one quarter of barley and one bushel of malt’.

      (Besides this family, we also know of John Grome, who had a daughter ‘Jonne’ (Joan) baptised in Stoke Poges on 3 April 1585 and a son Robert baptised there on 1 January 1596; and Thomas Grome, who had a son Thomas baptised at Stoke Poges on 31 May 1565. It may have been this Thomas Groome of Stoke Poges whose estate was administered through the Archdeaconry Court of Buckingham on 19 October 1640: the document, which is only partly legible, refers to ‘the G – de Beconsfield – creditor & auditor (?)…. Mr Birch De Chessham (?) Magna yeoman in – Andree –’). We do not know how these Grooms were related to the family of Agnes and William).

      William Grome

      He was probably born about the 1550s. He is rendered picturesquely as ‘Wyllyam Grome’ in the Stoke Poges parish registers. His wife was Margery. The land in Stoke Poges fell under the Manor of Stoke Poges, whose court rolls survive (in Buckinghamshire Record Office, ref. Ref. D/11/3/5) from 1430 to 1574. These have been searched and they revealed only one reference to the family, a William Grome, who served as a member of the Grand Jury at the manorial court on 23 October 1571, and then appears again on 28 November 1574 (recorded as William ‘Grove’) serving on the Homage (Jury). These references mean simply that, as a copyholder of the manor, William was called to serve on the jury, which was presided over by the Lord of the Manor’s steward, and which settled disputes on matters relating to land tenure in Stoke Poges.
