About this ebook

I don’t jump when people tell me to.

I’m my own woman.

I make smart choices. Usually.

That was before Atlas. He sets my panties on fire.

He’s bad news. A rough and ready, get down and dirty biker. The kind of guy your mother warns you about. The kind of guy I avoid like the plague.

If I give in, everything I’ve worked so hard for will be jeopardized. Our worlds don’t mesh. Our lives…we’re night and day. And yet, I’m drawn to him like a moth to a flame. I need more. I’ve never wanted anything so desperately. Now, if only I could get out of my own way.

I deserve to be happy, right? But, at what cost?

    Dragon Maverick - Ava Catori

    Chapter 1

Nick Atlas Kostas washed his hands and checked his tie. At least she didn’t make him wear a monkey suit. His mother taught him how to do a Winchester knot when he was younger, but these days he barely touched a necktie.

Eh, good enough, he said, then pushed out the door. He spun around the corner as a woman came from the other direction. Nearly crashing into one another, a quick swerve on her part saved the day.

Sorry about that. He apologized for not being more careful.

The woman had soft, baby blonde hair that shimmered even in the crappy fluorescent lighting of the hallway. She was quite a stunner with pouty lips, a curvy full-figure that you could hold onto, and the eyes of an angel. No doubt she left her wings at home, but he was certain she owned a pair.

The woman’s gaze swept from his face to his toes, and back up again. He had shoulders like a linebacker, arms that were meant for snuggling into, and a face that left her weak in the knees.  Wow, good looking guy. She caught her breath and answered.

No problem. By the way, your tie is a little crooked. Can I fix that for you?

Right, sure. Ties were never my strong point, he said.

She reached up and adjusted his tie with a delicate touch. There you go. I need to run. It’s time to get this show started.

As quickly as he’d bumped into her, she was already turning away from him. He wanted to call out to her. Stay, talk for a while. He was desperate for another moment. He wanted to get lost in her eyes. They shimmered like diamonds when she smiled. Atlas watched her walk away. Oh, another lovely view. Not bad at all.

The navy sheath she wore hugged her ample curves. She certainly wasn’t trying to hide them like a lot of women do. Nice, full hips, a wide ass, and holy hell she knew how to walk in those heels. Her ass swished back and forth and she scampered down the hallway. He smiled and listened to her heels click on the tile floor.

Atlas wasn’t sure what just happened, but a lightning bolt zapped him. He stood frozen in place until she was out of sight. It was rare for him to be drawn to a woman so quickly. Honestly, these days, most were all the same, a carbon copy of every other woman he’d already met. Not this one. Something was different. He gathered his wits and found his way back to the auditorium.

His sister waved him over. There you are! I was getting worried about you. Here’s the camera. Get as many good pictures as you can. I want to send them to his father. I wish Josh could be here. He’d love this.

Atlas patted his sister’s hand. One more year and he’s out.

Josh was serving in the military and was too far away to make it to his son’s graduation.

Dawn leaned into her big brother. You clean up nicely.

Atlas grunted. A tie for kindergarten graduation? You don’t think it’s overkill?

I think it’s perfect. Thank you for wearing it. Zander will feel special that we’re all dressed up for him. You know he adores his Uncle Nick. She stopped talking as the event started.

Atlas turned his attention to the small stage. There she was. He lit up on seeing her again. Butterflies. Damn, he didn’t even know he was still capable of getting butterflies. They rarely visited his stomach these days. He needed more. A lot more.

Good afternoon. Thank you for joining us on this very special day. I’m Ms. Darling or as some of you call me, Ms. Macy. It’s been an honor to spend time with your children. I’m proud of how much they’ve accomplished, and know they’ll thrive and grow as they move on to first grade. We’ve put together a song for you in celebration of this momentous occasion. She turned toward a piano, sat on the bench, and looked at the children. Okay gang, one, two, three...

A chorus of mismatched voices gave a stirring performance, but Atlas could only see their teacher. He forced himself to take pictures for his brother-in-law, but snapped one or two of the lovely blonde while he was at it.

As the ceremony wound down, kids threw their little caps into the sky and ran to their parents. Everybody gathered their things to leave. A few stopped to speak with the teacher, and others left as soon as they were able. There was a table with cookies and juice out, carrots and celery, along with small bottles of water.

I want to talk to Macy, Dawn said. I have a gift card as a thank you.

Isn’t teaching her job? he asked.

That’s not the point, she said. She was wonderful with Zander, and it’s a simple way to let her know I appreciate the extra effort she put in.

Right, he said, already pulling away from the conversation.

Zander ran over to the couple. Uncle Nick!

Z-man, you did a great job with the song. He bent down and gave his nephew a hug. Congratulations. You’re all grown up now!

I’m a kid, he said. One day I’ll be bigger and ride a motorcycle like you, and...

That’s my boy. Atlas grinned on hearing that Zander wanted to be like him.

Mmm, we’ll talk about that last part, she warned. There was plenty of time. It wasn’t that motorcycles bothered her, but she’d seen her brother get into his own share of trouble since being in that bike club. The Rebel Dragons, which he now led. Yeah...she had opinions, but she’d keep them to herself.

Zander grabbed his Uncle Nick’s hand and pulled him toward his teacher. Ms. Darling, this is my uncle.

Oh. A glint or recognition. She blushed. Her face glowed like angels had come down from heaven to sprinkle
