this book is just his life story, and basically every life lesson you already know. It would be better if you picked up a novel.

How to Sell

––––––––

In 2007 I quit my full time job and began dedicating my life to writing. It’s something I’ve been in love with ever since I was a kid. My devotion to everything about books began at an early age. The first book I read was Superfudge by Judy Blume. I vividly remember coming home from the library with that book in my hands; I felt giddy. When I turned over that first page I was hooked!

In those days, my childhood home was jam-packed with people. Not wanting to be distracted from the task at hand, I locked myself in the downstairs bathroom, leaving only after I had flipped through the last page. That was the day in which, not only my passion for reading began, but my passion for writing as well. As the years went by, I continuously wrote many of my thoughts in black and white notebooks. I wanted to do everything possible to keep alive my goal, of one day becoming an author. Nowadays, I can always be found with the computer on my lap. I’m constantly pounding away on the keyboard as if it were a conga drum. My mind and fingers are always playing to the soft rhythm of their own beat.

Writing books is a lot of fun! But unfortunately, selling them, well . . . not so much! As it turns out, it takes a tremendous amount of time and dedication. You have to be very skillful at sales to find maximum results. I decided to write this book so that others may follow in my footsteps. My goal is to teach you to become a prolific salesperson, and hopefully this book will motivate a few others to write their own book. There’s no greater joy than sharing your stories with the world.

As a result of my passion for writing, I quit my full-time job at a management firm. Also, I really hated what I was doing; don’t get me wrong, I got paid well. As a matter of fact, at that time, my salary was in the mid 60s; but I wasn’t happy. Robert Louis Stevenson once wrote: There is no duty we so much underrate as the duty of being happy. By being happy we sow anonymous benefits upon the world.

So at that precise moment in my life, I made a drastic decision. I dove off the proverbial cliff into the world of being a paid author. I put the word paid in quotations because there are many writers who don’t make money off their craft. My question is . . . Why not? Writing a book is incredibly difficult. My first novel, The Dark Room, took eighteen months to write. Going through the entire process (from creating a first draft, all the way to the production of a finished copy) was by far one of the most challenging things I have ever accomplished.

The question I asked myself was a simple one. If I worked so hard to create my book, why shouldn’t I be able to make a good living from writing? For what it’s worth, my decision was by no means an easy one. If you write and publish a novel, you’ll see for yourself how incredibly hard it is to make money from selling books. But for me, there is no better source of revenue than the passive income I receive from my intellectual property.

For me, the choice fundamentally came down to this: I was making a fairly decent salary; after taxes it came out to roughly 50k a year. So I thought to myself: If I could just make the same amount of money doing something which I truly loved, like writing, then I would pick that option instead (in a heartbeat).

Inherently, when you self-publish a book, you are in charge of your own marketing and distribution efforts. Really this amounts to running your own business—your own publishing house—only in this case, you are the secretary, the print shop, the writing agent, the marketing director, that sales rep, the author . . . You get my drift. You are a one man/woman army.

I’m not sure what’s going on in your life at this moment, but if you bought this book, chances are you are not too happy with your results. Maybe you’re simply looking for an alternative means of making money. Or you want to pick up sales techniques as an extra skill to add to your resume. But I promise you that if you follow the examples in this book, you’ll not only feel more equipped, but you will also see
