Love
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another
(1 John 4:11)
As we study the gifts of the Holy Spirit and His various operations, we need to consider the joint operation of God’s Spirit with our spirit. God is the giver and the believer is the recipient. It is therefore important that recipients of gifts should be prepared to use what they receive appropriately. This brings us to a point of having to know what is apportioned for the believer and what is apportioned for God. Let me reiterate that in the ‘‘spiritual life1 ,’’a book by the author of the book you are now reading entitled the ‘‘spiritual work’’, we defined the spiritual person as one who does the will of God. The will of God cannot be done through our own efforts but can be done through the power of the Holy Spirit in us. This is why we observe that Paul had come to a point of clearly defining the Christian life when he said ‘‘It is no longer I but Christ..’’, (Galatians 2:20).This means Paul was no longer alive in himself. All he did was a result of power emanating from God’s Spirit. Paul was Paul because of God not because of his own strength. This position of submitting entirely to the Holy Spirit is not easy. It is a life that comes after God has dealt with the believer. We can receive gifts regardless of our maturity. Even babes in the Lord have spiritual gifts, but it is my prayer that we should all come to the position where God can maximize the potential He has vested in us. Any person can be of use to the Lord but those who are mature are more useful than those who are still childish in the approach of spiritual matters .
Therefore in light of the need for character development for the sake of those who receive gifts, we shall look at the shortest verse in the bible to gain further understanding: ‘‘Jesus wept’’, ( John 11:35 ).This verse is known to be the shortest verse in the bible because it has only two words yet it is a great source of understanding. In this verse we hear that ‘‘Jesus wept’’. This was at the time of the death of Lazarus. Jesus had come there to raise him from his place of death but Lazarus was already dead and stinking. When Jesus saw this, He wept, ‘‘Then the Jews said, See how He loved him!
(John 11:36).Jesus wept because a friend He loved had died. Though He later resurrected him, it touches me to learn that Jesus wept. He wept because He loved him. In many scriptures we hear of Christ’s love. In John 3:16 we hear that God ‘‘so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.’’ The kingdom of God is a kingdom of love and must be driven by it. Without love we lose the purpose of our anointing. Jesus had love. Though He had resurrection power, it is more interesting to learn that He also had love. The church in this age stands in contrast with this situation . Many have power and spiritual gifts yet very few have unquestionable love. The kind of love that can cause weeping . In other portions of scripture we hear that Christ was moved with compassion (Mark 1:41,Luke 7:13).
Jesus had this amazing love that his disciples never denied. John spoke of Christ describing this wonderful attribute when he wrote that ‘‘God is love’’ (1 John 4: 8). Jesus had warned the disciples before He left while seated at the mount of olives in Matthew 24.He had told them that the end is near. Jesus did not say that man would not prophesy. He spoke concerning Love. He said ‘‘lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold,’’(Matthew 24:12).While many want to prove they have spiritual gifts what matters most is whether we have love. Without love these gifts are worthless. Without love we minister embarrassment. Jesus raised Lazarus because He loved him not because He wanted to display spiritual gimmicks. We need such people today , people who do not prophesy to show their spiritual prowess. We need people who are caused to minister by love. The Holy Spirit is love (Romans 5:5).We are empowered by love to minister love. Without love we should have nothing to show. Jesus does not say that in the last days ‘‘many’ s gifts will grow cold.’’ He instead mentions that ‘‘the love of many will grow cold.’’ Our love is more at threat than spiritual gifts. What a warning, what an advise and strong word of caution!
Let us compare this verse of Jesus weeping to another verse similar to it. In Luke 22:62 we read that ‘‘Peter went out, and wept bitterly.’’ In the beginning we mentioned that Jesus wept because He loved Lazarus. The verse at stake nonetheless speaks of a different case of weeping. Here it is Peter. Why did Peter weep ‘‘bitterly’’? Peter’s weeping happened at the time that he had denied the Lord. The Lord had told him that he would deny Him three times. When Peter realized that he had denied the Lord ‘‘he wept bitterly.’’ Having perused through this scripture,it should not be difficult to notice that Peter was in a moment of great anguish and regret. He had failed to prove his love to Christ. There is a stage in our walk with the Lord where some weep like Peter. Disappointment by self causes this weeping. We often do pass through a stage when our failures cause us to weep. We cannot love the Lord with our own strength. This was Peter’s primary cause of predicament. He thought he could love Christ by virtue of mere ambition. When his ambition had failed him we hear that he wept bitterly. Brethren we need not to weep like Peter. Though many of us often go through this stage it is not necessary for every Christian. Jesus has given us the power to love Him and to love others. All we need is to walk in that love, minister in that love and continually pray for the manifestation of that love in us. This is the simplicity of our Christian life.
There is not much doing required of us. We have been sponsored to do God’s work. The only weeping ahead of us should be one of love and compassion for others not of regret and failure. Though it happens, those who subject themselves under the empowerment of the Holy Spirit will suffer no such humiliation. Peter did not weep again after empowerment on the day of Pentecost. He got empowered by the Holy Spirit in order to be a Christian. He never denied the Lord again. In fact, he was even willing to sacrifice his life (Acts 4:18-20, 2 Peter 1:13).This we should realize, comes as a result of empowerment.Christ has suffered great pain at the hands of brutal men. He laid his life for us. When He did this, there was a great exchange. We have exchanged the weeping of Peter for the weeping of Christ. Christ wept due to love , Peter wept due to despair and failure. If we trust ourselves we will fail but with Christ, our work is a matter of love and compassion. The Holy Ghost has come upon us. This is why the song entitled ‘‘beautiful exchange’’performed by Hillsong makes a lot of sense. We need to appreciate this exchange. More than gifts we have been given love.We have been instructed to love. The greatest commandment is love. Christians must show love.
There are many labels which Christians attach to themselves but what matters is love. Some call themselves Pentecostals. Pentecost is a Jewish holiday in which God is said to have given the Holy Spirit to the church (Acts 1:1).By doing this ,God showed love. Those who call themselves Pentecostals should therefore care to love. Then there are those who call themselves Charismatics.Such Christians have a reputation of being followed
