Get Clear: Foreword
I am a good presenter. It’s part of what I do: stand in front of a crowd and convince them to change their behavior, start down a new path, and even (gasp!) give me money for it. I’m comfortable on stage and enjoy standing in the light.
It wasn’t always that way. I’ve overcome my share of stage fright episodes, mid-talk flubs and blanks. There were presentations that didn’t connect, talks after which I thought ‘why were so many people not paying attention?’ True, it didn’t happen a lot. But just once could make me question the entire structure and content of a previously successful presentation.
Then I met Sandra in a local business network. I mentioned that I was trying to get a large company in town to give me a speaking engagement, and she shared her approach to successful corporate speaking. Her philosophy was different, and it made perfect sense. I tried it at my next meeting with them and it worked!
As time went on, Sandra and I continued to talk about speaking – and about all the preparation that (should) go into a presentation. I began implementing her advice, using the tips and questions that you’ll find in this book. Now they are part of my regular routine. I have learned to ‘get clear’ – about my audience, my goals, and most importantly, my motivation. What a difference! I spend less time writing scripts and decks and more time enjoying a conversation with my audience.
Presenting effectively is one of the most important and most undervalued business skills. In corporate life, ineffective presentations waste time and can lead to poor decision-making. Make a few bad business decisions in a row and you can bring down a business. Make a few good ones and you can transform it for the better. If you speak for a living, the stakes are even higher; a few bad presentations can kill your business!
