CHAPTER ONE

Cole Linley waited as the doorway cleared. He stood near the entrance to the Balls & Chains—a gay club he liked to frequent. But first, as was his usual practice, he discreetly let out a claw and scratched the wall. It was a form of marking his territory or showing the presence of the Alpha wolf.

He chuckled to himself. Well, I could have rubbed my butt against the wall instead! Wolf-shifters, like their wild brethren, had scent glands at the base of their spines. However, that would have entailed him taking his clothes off, and it was the submissives at the club who removed their pants, not the Doms.

Then he grimaced. Unfortunately, the only wolf likely to be at the Balls & Chains was him.

Cole was a wolf-shifter, a member of a small minority of shapeshifters throughout the world, who usually lived in isolated groups in the countryside where they were free to morph into their animal selves and run free. Cole was unusual in that he lived in the city, although his home, in a quiet suburb, had very extensive grounds.

Leaning against the wall, Cole nodded to a fellow Dom who passed by with his sub. Evening. He grinned as the sub went red. Cole had ‘played’ with him in the past, before he took up with his present Master. Tim wanted more than Cole was prepared to give.

Eager to enter and get his hands around a whip, Cole reached into his pocket pulling out a tin to eat one of the purple pills disguised as candies he bought from a Chinese herbalist. These were essential for keeping his wolf submerged.

His reasons for choosing a life in the large metropolis were varied—the company he owned, which dealt with buying and selling real estate, and was located in the city being the foremost reason. There was also the fact he spurned female wolves, as he was gay. Although homosexuality in wolves wasn’t unknown, it meant he felt uncomfortable in the wolf community where the emphasis was on perpetuating the shifter line—something he clearly couldn’t do.

Additionally, as an only child, he had no family left, as his parents had died in a car accident fifteen years’ earlier, and therefore no ties to the small community he had grown up in.

Hey, Cole. How’re things? Haven’t seen you for a while.

Cole nodded to Andy Miller, the owner of the club, who spied Cole hanging back as he opened the door to greet those arriving. Although they were friends, it wasn’t a close relationship. No one at the Balls & Chains knew what he was—nor anyone in the city, for that matter. All wolf-shifters were extremely careful to keep their inner wolf hidden. And, yet, part of what appealed to him about the BDSM lifestyle was the ability to dominate others the way his wolf wanted him to. It was the closest he could get to being an Alpha in a world of humans.

Sauntering to the doorway, Cole answered, Been busy with work. What’s new around here? Any subs looking for a Master? Cole might not have found his soulmate—despite being in his late thirties, he had never expected to as that was more common amongst heterosexual shifters—but there were many submissives he’d played with over the years. All of them human, of course, so he never got too close to any of them. When they started to show romantic feelings, he terminated the contract. On the other hand, he had never felt the need to collar any of them.

Collaring was something very close and personal between Master and submissive, and Cole had not once fallen in love with anyone. No, he just relished dominating his subs and having occasional sex.

Andy chuckled in response to Cole’s question. Always. In fact, we have a submissive auction coming up in a few weeks. If there is anyone who appeals to you tonight, you might be lucky enough to get their contract.
