Having a Medic Mentality
Some medical conditions are easy to detect while others are not because they are too complex for laymen or untrained personnel. But how do you know the difference? Some diagnoses however, are best done by professionals. For example, you may ignore the symptoms of a headache and take painkillers. So what do you do when it escalates? Hence a medic mentality.
Reacting to Medical Problems Sensibly
There are generally three ways people react to medical problems. These are:
- Dealing with it appropriately: Most people assess the cause of their health problem, seek professional advice and then deal with it.
- Having a 'stiff-upper-lip' attitude: These types are known as stoics as they act to the detriment of their health. They usually wait till others force them to seek medical treatment after their health symptoms have worsened.
- Worrying too much: Some people are very anxious about their health and therefore take every minor problem as a potentially serious medical condition. This pressures to them contact a health professional for assurance that the condition is not serious.
Dealing with your health conditions can be a little complicated. This can bring about making undue panic calls to health professionals which wastes their time better spent on other patients suffering from actual threatening health conditions. Think like a medic, and do this rather:
- Have patience: Don't make matters worse by getting too anxious. Most symptoms are not due to serious illnesses. However, seeking medical advice and getting reassurance is necessary to calm your mind.
- Buy time: Apart from medical emergencies like heart attacks and bleeding profusely, don't panic. You can do a general health check in the meantime.
Gaining basic skills in self diagnosis
With the right frame of mind, you can tackle health conditions like any other daily problem. For making prognosis follow these steps:
- Ask questions: You can make an early diagnosis by asking yourself the right questions about your health. This helps you size up the causes of your symptoms to decide whether they have a slight or serious impact on your health.
- Assess your body: Having a frequent physical check- ups help you notice signs of symptoms quickly. After noticing the symptoms, you can now make your next decision.
Identifying and Assessing Illnesses: The Basics
Looking at health behavior
According to researchers, there are differences in how people deal with their health problems based on diverse factors.
Feeling threatened: Many seek medical advice when the health condition is threatening or the other way around. For example, when the symptom is that of heart attack or HIV, professional advice is sought because they are scared enough.
Getting 'cues to action': With this, you may seek medical advice for physical symptoms after reading an article or watching a TV program on health. Yet again, the fear factor is motivating them to action.
Being on top of health concerns: You are confident in dealing with any symptom.
Perception about a medical condition: Your approach to a health condition can be affected by the environment or upbringing. This can make you ignore or act on the seriousness of a health risk. Medical conditions are best managed with self-awareness and
