    Introduction

Learning the Technical Game of Football

Welcome to Learning the Technical Game of Football where I have been inspired to write and update this book for all budding young footballers in the United Kingdom and across the World.

In the genes coaching family members at the highest level - Top Centre: Christopher Agutter and Bottom Centre George Agutter

I hope that the past World Cup held in Brazil and forth coming one to be held in Russia will serve as an inspiration to the countless millions of young Boys, Girls, and Adult Players, wanting to improve their Technical Game of Football.

It was back in 1970 I saw my first World Cup proper in Mexico, and where I was blessed with seeing a timeless piece of sporting history, as I watched the Great Pele mesmerize his opponents and saw the Greatest Goalkeeper of all time, Gordon Banks.

The book is dedicated to two of my Family who are known for continuing sporting traditions at the highest level. Pictured above, is a time span of four generations and two outstanding consummate teachers of their respective professions. On the left as a young School Boy Christopher Agutter (my youngest Son), today a Professional Football Development Coach for Schools and Football Clubs in England. And on the right George Agutter (my Great Uncle), a Professional Tennis Player and Coach in the American Professional Tennis Players Association, and where he eventually became the President and Dean of the USA Professional Tennis Players Association.

At the time of George and Christopher starting their sporting journeys, they both had passion and dedication to aspire and achieve great things in their lives. A quality required in every dedicated sports person who wants to be successful!

Having taught Football and played the game myself, and really understanding the technical aspects of football from years of study and watching. And also being fortunate and blessed, to be taught by the very best myself, my first Coach being Tony Bentley of Stoke City a Gordon Banks playing partner and team mate. Also Peter Taylor, former England Manager, who also endorsed my work and endeavours, especially setting up Junior Football for the Community.

I truly hope this book will greatly help every Footballer improve their technical skills from non-league junior football, through to professional and international level, and from just a few hours reading, makes an enormous contribution in making far better players, domestically and internationally.

    Sincere Best Wishes,

    Alastair Agutter

    Chapter One

First Starting Out in the Art of Football

I remember clearly one hot summer’s day back in 1995 similar to today, where Christopher my youngest Son, was just coming up to 7 years of age. He sat with me at our local recreation ground one late afternoon on the Sports Pavilion landing in East Sussex. As we looked out across the grass, Christopher informed me he wanted to be a Professional Footballer. He then proceeded to ask me how he could achieve such an ambition.

I told Christopher as we looked out over the recreation ground; to become a great player you have to think about the game of football, even before you ever kick a ball. I informed him.

I said to him, try to imagine the football field is like a chess board, but all the pieces are constantly moving, and so you have to constantly calculate your opponents next moves continuously, and to be able to achieve this, you need two good feet, and a great team of players around you, with the skills where you look as if you have all the time in the world when you are on the ball.

Great players I told him, create their own space, with the help of team members. He then asked me what position he should play. I informed Christopher the conductor, or the engine room, is the midfield. All great winning international teams have great
