About this ebook

It was a quiet morning in the Cold Case office, as Detective Russ Baker sat contemplating his life. Then his ghost partner, Wes, materialized and had an unbelievable tale of a zombie apocalypse if the Ghost Squad couldn’t find the killers of three Satan worshipping priests. Halloween would be the night for the doom of the world if they failed. They have to reopen a ten year old case and track down anyone involved in the murders to find who actually shot the men and stop the curse from the demons who appeared that fateful day. With only days left, they hunt for the killers to get them to confess. This is the tenth book of the Ghost Squad series and it’s a novella, shorter than a novel but longer than a short story

Detroit area resident, Bob Moats, has been writing short stories and plays for as long as he can remember. He has lost most of his original stories, typed or handwritten, in the numerous moves he has made from his hometown of Fraser, Michigan to Northern Michigan, to Las Vegas and back to Fraser, where he now lives. Moats became one of the causalities of unemployment a year ago, and had time on his hands to finally pursue a life long dream of writing a full blown crime novel. Thus was born the first book, "Classmate Murders".What followed was a series of seven books starting with "The Classmate Murders" which introduces the main character, Jim Richards, who has to admit he has become a senior citizen, reluctantly. Richards, one day, receives an email from a childhood sweetheart asking for his help, but by the time he reaches her, she has been murdered. His life turns around and he is pulled into numerous murders of women from his high school who he hasn't seen in forty years. Along with a friend of his, Buck, a big, mustached biker, they go off to track down the killer before he can get to one former classmate, Penny Wickens, a TV talk show host who Jim has just fallen for while protecting her. The killer is also murdering the women right out from under police protection, driving homicide detective Will Trapper crazy, and he slowly depends on Jim to help. There's humor, suspense, wild chases across suburban Detroit with cops, classic cars and motorcycle clubs; murder, mayhem, a good amount of romance and a twist ending.Jim and his crime fighters, continue in the other books, traveling to Las Vegas twice, back to Detroit and out to New York to solve murders involving dominatrix; mistresses; Bridezillas; magic and strip clubs.Book titles: Classmate Murders; Vegas Showgirl Murders; Dominatrix Murders; Mistress Murders; Bridezilla Murders; Magic Murders; Strip Club Murders and Made-for-TV Murders.

    Chapter 1

Being banished to the Cold Case Department was both a boon and a bane to me. I screwed up on a couple of homicide cases and the head honchos decided I couldn’t get into much trouble if they put me in the basement where all the cold case files were stored. It became my office and I was originally alone in the dungeon.

Then he showed up. His name was Wesley Loomis, Detroit Police Homicide Detective First Class, and he was a ghost. Yes, a dead detective assigned by some guy in the other world to assist me in solving cold cases so the dead victims could get some rest and go on to their rewards. Wherever that was. Wes, as he wanted to be called, wasn’t sure where the hereafter was but he had his theories. After two months of working with his efforts to help, we had a good system going for us. It was all good.

The second good thing that happened to me was I finally got close to Mary Cohen. She started out in Missing Persons and then transferred to help me with cases. At first, after I told Mary about Wes, she couldn’t see or hear him. Then Wes got permission from his spiritual boss to let her see and hear him. That made my life easier not having to repeat everything he said. We finally got married in a simple ceremony in Mary’s home town. We were there to investigate the murder of her stepfather and solved that case. We married before going back to Detroit and we’ve been solving murders ever since.

Hey, Russ, we have a problem, Wes exclaimed, as he materialized before my desk. Mary looked over from her desk and listened.

    What now, Wes? I asked.

You know that Halloween is coming up soon and we have a murder to solve before it happens.

Okay, are all the ghosts in the file room going to be released to haunt the countryside if we don’t? I said with a smile.

Don’t joke, this is serious. There are three ghosts whose earthly beings were murdered on Halloween ten years ago and they were cursed to live in limbo until the tenth year. There will be consequences if their spirits aren’t released.

What kind of consequences? I asked.

Terrible things. Dead people will crawl out of their graves and become zombies clawing after the living. Demons from the underworld will be released and destroy cities.

Wes that seems great in movies, but this is real life. I can’t believe all those things will happen just because three people were murdered on Halloween ten years ago.

Don’t be so skeptical. You’ve seen what it’s like to have spirits around.

Wes, the worst that happened was all those ghosts that attacked the kidnapper of the boy. You were the one who did that with your energy. What makes you think this will happen now?

Russ, you’ve read the books about demon possessions, headless ghosts haunting castles and witches that inhabited the country years ago. Where do you think those stories came from? They were real. And this will be the apocalypse to end all of us. Think how many bodies are buried, numbering in the millions from eons of time. Imagine all those people coming back to decimate us.
