    Chapter 1

Salt Eden in the late evening. It’s dark outside the windows. Abigail and Nathan are in the hallway on the seventh floor, just outside the dining hall.

Abigail shuffles forward on her crutches. I can’t believe what I just saw.

Nathan walks beside her. He looks back over his shoulder to make sure they aren’t being overheard. I caught a glimpse of what was on his phone. I saw it too. They were carrying the bodies out. I knew that Chad guy was no good.

But Dad was there too. How could he do that?

Let’s go ask him. Nathan walks faster towards their father’s office. They pass the clinic and the meeting room and stop at his door. Abigail looks uncertain, after what they have just seen. Nathan bangs on the metal door.

Robert opens the door and stands in the doorway. He looks at both his children in turn, waiting for them to speak. Yes, what is it?

We saw the feed from the security camera in the hall there. Abigail gestures with her head, back towards the meeting room. Then she looks into his eyes.

Robert says nothing for a long moment. Yes? And?

Her eyes fill with tears that she blinks away. How could he have done that and now be lying about it? We saw what you did to all those people.

Abigail. It’s going to be okay. Everything’s going to be okay. I’m going to make this into the safe place that I promised you.

Nathan huffs. Just keep telling yourself that, Dad. He turns away and heads towards the stairs.

Abigail’s eyes plead. I don’t understand... How could you do that?

It’s for the best, Sweetheart... You look tired. Why don’t you turn in for the night? I think Josh is already asleep... I haven’t seen him out of his room since early evening. He steps out into the hall, reaching towards her.

Abigail shakes her head, shifts back on her crutches and hobbles away down the hall. Nathan! Wait up!

He turns and stops at the stairs. You coming? I’m going to look for Stephanie. Maybe she knows what’s going on.

Let’s take the elevator? She gestures with her crutches.

Sure. They turn around and head back to the elevator. Robert is no longer in the hallway. They press the button to call the elevator.

A couple joins them, waiting for the elevator. They’re holding hands. She looks like she’s been crying.

He speaks to her quietly. It’s going to be okay, Leslie. We’re together.

The elevator dings just before it opens. They go in and Nathan pushes the button for the third floor. I think most of the colonists live on the third floor - that’s where the pool is.

The guy presses 5. Yeah. Lucky them. When the elevator stops, the couple steps out on the fifth floor.

The doors close. And unlucky you, Abigail. I can’t believe Dad stuck you up there on the seventh floor - the same floor as him. Guess he’ll be watching you.

And wasn’t it creepy how he said that Josh was already asleep? What, does he have cameras in the rooms or something?

Nathan shrugs. I wouldn’t put it past him at this point. The elevator dings and they get off on the third floor. They walk along the hall until they gets to the exit to the courtyard. It’s dark out.

"I’m not sure what her room number is but I saw her come out when some of
