    The Invitation

    Tiny, watch what you're doing with that thing! Faith demanded.

    Oh, sorry, I apologized.

    You guys had to get her a paddle ball for our birthday? Faith asked.

    Faith and I had just turned nine. We were sitting in our family room, playing with all the new presents our parents had given us.

    It's a classic from when your mother and I were kids, Dad insisted.

    I tried to be a little more careful with the paddle ball, but I really wanted to learn it. It looked so easy when Dad did it. I could barely get the hang of it.

    My parents wouldn't let me have one, Mom told us.

    I wonder why, The paddle ball hit a small vase, knocking it over. Fortunately, it didn't break.

    Maybe that's why, Mom answered. Why don't we move on to other presents.

    How about this one? Faith asked. It was an envelope. I almost didn't notice it. It's flat. It can't be too exciting.

    Mom and Dad gave each other a knowing look.

    I snatched the envelope from Faith and tugged it open.

    Hey! she yelled. I wanted to open it.

    I'll let you read it, I offered.

    Dear Faith and Destiny,

    We hope you are doing well. We know you never really get to see us, so we are inviting you out to our little home in the country for your birthday. It might just bring new and exciting adventures. You may bring a friend if you wish.

    What kind of present is that? Faith asked. They're not going to give us stuff?
