- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not a bad resource for writers. There are things to be learned here. The exercises look helpful, though I have to admit I didn't do them. But that was mainly due to being busy myself. Helpful advice, though nothing earth-shattering. The writing itself is average; the conversational style, instead of drawing me in, actually threw me off for some reason. I would say not a waste of time, but not mandatory.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Dialogue is part of a continuing series on writing instruction teaching its reader the "techniques and exercises for crafting effective dialogue." I thought this book did just that. Lots of tips which I found to be very helpful, I'm hoping some of the lessons sunk in and I will be even more aware when I'm falling short with what dialogue is supposed to accomplish in any given scene. There were plenty of writing exercises to strengthen the "muscle memory" of the brain and I felt very encouraged that I, too, could write good dialogue. It just takes practice.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Depending on how good a writer you are this book will either be a huge help or a waste of time. I myself have struggled with dialogue a lot, and in several ways. It took me awhile to get through this (as it does for any non-fiction book) but I'm glad I did. I really think it helped me. Getting more familiar with proper punctuation made me loosen up and just let the dialogue flow out and there are a lot of good tips for getting into your character's heads and how dialogue can be used to do various, wondrous things. Don't be afraid of dialogue--embrace it!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Kempton thoroughly covered the subject of Dialogue. She took the beginner from no-knowledge to understanding, using and mastering the craft. She provided examples, projects to practice, and contrasting ways not to do it.
Her encouraging steps enabled success even for the most needy writer.
I was able to finish the book and say, "I can do this."
I will keep this on my shelves to refer back to it as a reference and encouragement. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Part of the "Write Great Fiction" series. Like all books in this series, each chapter tackles a relevant topic. There are tips on how and when to alternate dialogue with narrative, how to make sure each character's voice is unique, and intensifying conflict and emotion with dialogue. There are multiple exercises at the end of each chapter to help practice what you just learned.
