    1 A BABY

    I'm pregnant.

There is not much that can make me speechless, but Cleara had succeeded with this statement. I stood there dumb founded. Honestly I was afraid to ask who the father was. It turned out I didn't have to.

It's Farloft's, she confessed. She slowly collapsed into the chair by my hearth like a bellows with the air released. I don't know what to do. She lowered her head into her hands in despair. If I were not cursed I would be so incredibly happy. I love Farloft. The idea of having his pup is...everything I have ever dreamed of. She lifted her head and reached out for my hand. I am so scared.

I took her hand and gave it a squeeze.

We'll get you through this, I tried to assure her. In honesty my heart was probably pounding harder than hers. Her base form was dragon - a beautiful blue western with a nasty spell cast on her that made her shift from her night form as the dragon, Clearair, into her human form, Cleara, during the daylight hours, as she appeared this morning. This was a dilemma. Farloft was our resident dragon and my dear friend. I knew they had been spending time together while she was in her base form as dragon, I did not know they had chosen each other as mates.

A tear rolled down her face and she pulled her hand away. She wiped at it, but another followed close on its heels. Do you know how long it has been since the birth of a dragon in the west? I can't remember one in my lifetime and my life spans at least five generations of you humans.

I felt I needed to voice my concerns. The baby might be dragon, but what if it were a human child because of the curse?

I poured us each a cup of tea and spooned liberal mounts of honey into mine. I always crave more sweets when I am under pressure and I do my best thinking over a hot cup of tea.

Have you told Farloft? I asked.

Cleara shook her head. I wanted to talk to you first. To make sure... her voice trailed off and her head fell back into her hands. I want... she couldn't finish her thought for the tears that choked her voice into silence. She did not have to tell me. She had thought of the same outcome of a human child as I had when she first told me. How could a dragon raise a human child?

I came out of my chair and moved to her side. She wrapped her arms around my waist, buried her face in my tunic and sobbed.

    2 A HATCHLING

Farloft curled himself protectively around Clearair. He draped a wing over her and nuzzled her neck affectionately. It was evening and she was in her dragon form. She was still crying.

Don't cry, my love, Farloft soothed. Of course, I am thrilled at the thought of a hatchling. I am not that old that I don't look forward to the sound of little paws on the slate of the cave floor. You are my life now. I cannot live without you. It was not an idle statement. They had both made the commitment to the other. They had locked their hearts - one could no longer live without the other.

I'm scared, Clearair admitted through her tears. The scales around her eyes were pale blue and puffy from crying. What will we do if I am in human form and the baby is a child?

We will coup somehow. Farloft cleared his throat. He was upset too - centuries of living without a mate, alone, now he had Clearair and the possibility of a new hatchling. The hatchling he had lost along with Belice and his dream years ago. It had to work its way out. It was his dreams coming true and he would do all he could to reassure her and keep her safe.

He gently licked the tears from her face. His forehead came to rest against hers. We are dragons, he said in his low strong baritone. We do not live such long lives that we can't learn to adjust to anything thrown at us.

    *****

Clearair is pregnant, I told Sarah.

    Her jaw dropped. How?

I would assume the usual way, I answered with a-you-have-to-be-kidding smile.

No, that's not what I meant, Sarah corrected.

I know what you meant, I assured her, becoming more sober. I was just joking. She and Farloft are committed. She was telling me of their heart binding the night you brought Sim to me.

James is going to have a baby brother or sister, Sarah said with a thoughtful grin.

Her thoughts had drifted to James and were not on the problem I came here to discuss. I thought I would bring her back to reality.

If Clearair delivers a pup, yes, I stated flatly. But, Cleara could deliver a child.

Sarah's face fell. The shift, she said breathing out a long sigh.

The shift, I confirmed. I will probably need help. I was hoping you would be up to it. I am sure Cleara will not want any more people to know of her curse than already do.

Of course, Sarah assured me. I'll do all I can.

She went to the hearth and swung the kettle over the fire to warm. I had taught her well. She was already reaching for the teapot.

Sarah took down mugs from the shelf to the right of the hearth and placed them along with the honey on the table between our two chairs before the fire. Neither of us spoke. We were both deep in our own thoughts. When the kettle came to a boil she poured a splash of water in the pot to warm it. She stood swirling it about.

I have been working on something I want to tell you about, Sarah said.

She spooned tea in the pot and then poured the rest of the boiling water over it. She set the pot down on the table.

Maybe I should show you instead. She started to walk away.

    Should I come?

No, I'll get it and be right back. She walked to the back of the study out of view behind my tall backed chair. When she returned she sat down leaning her staff against the arm of her chair. She opened her other hand to reveal a good sized toad.

    Watch, she said with anticipation.

She spoke an incantation over the toad in her lap and thumped her staff three times on the floor. To my amazement the toad turned into a small puppy. The little brown fluff blinked its eyes as though awakening from a sleep. It yapped up at Sarah in what I can only describe as astonishment. It slid down her legs off her lap to run over and hid in a corner under a low table.

Sarah parked her staff by leaning it on the arm of her chair once more. She reached over and poured us our tea nonchalantly as though she had not just successfully changed a large green toad into a cute little puppy with seemingly no effort on her part.

I have been working on that incantation since I first came to the castle and found Laval's journals. I was looking for the spell that turned James into a dragon. I know you looked for it when you were in residence here. I had already mastered this one when I found out from James that it was not an oral incantation, but a potion Laval made from Farloft's wing. Besides, Sarah sighed, James is not interested in being a boy again. He told me he far prefers being a dragon.

He told me the same thing, I assured Sarah.

Sarah took a sip of her tea.I was just wondering if we could reverse the spell on Clearair somehow, she mused into her cup.

She leaned over and made kissy sounds at the puppy encouraging it to come to her. The pup came and she lifted it up into her lap again. She gently stroked its head. When I didn't reply she turned in her chair to look hopefully at me.

We have worked together before. Perhaps we could figure it out.

Our last endeavor had not gone well. Yes, we figured out how to activate Master Lee's medallion, but we needed a masterful sorcerer, three dragons, a troop of the Queen's guard, and a kingdom full of peasants to get things back under control again. It was not a good sign that working together was a beneficial pursuit. I felt I needed to put a stop to this dream before it got out of hand.

Unless Clearair can remember the exact incantation I would not want to hazard a try at reversing it. Especially in her condition, too many things could go drastically wrong.

I suppose you are right, Sarah acknowledged, but she had a faraway look in her eyes as she continued to stroke the puppy.

I made a mental note to keep an eye on her and her newfound talents. She was not the young girl who came to me
