- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5As a screed against the supposed White Cis Male Hegemony, it works well. Not so much as a movie review guide.
The author tries to couch such comments with the air of an academic, but this is undone when strong philosophical themes NOT directly related to the author’s cause are dismissed with a “you can read into this as much or as little as you like”. See the Robocop entry for an example. THAT movie has a lot to unpack. Care to guess what the author focuses on? It’s been a while since I’ve read a book by someone who appears to hate the topic of their book so strongly.
If that weren’t enough, there’s the factual inaccuracies (Tom Selleck wasn’t IN Top Gun. Not even a cameo). All in all, I prefer a manifesto-free movie guide.
