About this ebook
I have made no attempt to include everything about my childhood, the experiences on the mission field, or events later in my life. This is an attempt to give an overview of my life and ministry. It is an effort to give a "why", "how", and "where." I would hope that this book will preserve my story, before it is lost for future generations, "It is no secret what God can do!"
Marshall Phillips
Marshall grew up on a farm in Kentucky. He was the seventh child of Moses and Addie Smith Phillips. This is a story of a rural, poor farm boy, being aware of God's call in his life and how that call would change his life. He had dropped out of school about two thirds through his freshman year and was out of school for six years. It is a story of how God has led from a high school dropout to graduating from Cumberland College, Williamsburg, Kentucky, earning a Bachelor's Degree from Georgetown College, Georgetown, Kentucky, a Master's Degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. He is fluent in both English and Swahili, after spending much of his ministry in Kenya and Tanzania, East Africa. The stories in this book reflect adventures about which most of us only dream. Some stories are adventurous, some are filled with humor. As Marshall has said, "You had to have a sense of humor to survive." This book is not only an autobiography, but it is filled with interesting and exciting adventures not only in Kentucky, but in a land, and language, thousands of miles from home.

DEDICATION
To my grandkids I would hope that the struggles and joys of following Christ will be an inspiration to all, and that nothing is impossible if God is behind it. Nothing is too big!
To Dorsie, my companion for all those years. She too shared in the hardship, joys, and sacrifices that we made together. I could never have made the journey without her support and love.
To my children, Sandy, Pam and Todd. They too made sacrifices; sometimes very difficult. I’m so proud of them as they have made the journey with me and are talented, beautiful adults, now with a family of their own.
To Bryron Crawford whose friendship and encouragement and expertise in writing have made this book possible.

FOREWORD
This little book should come with a warning label: Once you open it, you can’t put it down.
Marshall Phillips is a gifted story teller, and this is a compelling story. His personal reflections left me with an even greater appreciation and respect for Marshall’s unwavering determination to answer God’s call and for his wife Dorsie and their three children, Sandy, Pam and Todd who gave up a normal life in America to serve with him on a mission field in East Africa.
It is now easy to see how a shy Kentucky farm boy was being prepared very early in life for a tough and unpredictable life of a missionary on the far side of the globe. Marshall might never have imagined that not many years after he was milking cows on a farm in Shelby County… with little hope of ever finishing high school… God would use him to bring the Gospel’s greatest message to the people of East Africa.
For many who have enjoyed Marshall’s preaching and teaching over the years, as I have, these stories may help explain why, though much of his ministry was in a far away land and in a language that most of us have never heard, except in National Geographic documentaries, he is still one of us.
Thankfully, he began writing some of his memories at the urging of a granddaughter, mostly as a keepsake for his family. But these stories serve a much greater purpose in reminding us all of what God can do.

EARLY CHILDHOOD
I was the youngest of seven children of Moses and Addie Smith Phillips, four boys and three girls. My dad was a share cropper and as far back as I can remember we were poor. Even the poor people thought we were poor. My dad was not very aggressive in making a living and without the efforts of mom, I’m sure we would have struggled even more. I remember being hungry most of the time. We had few special treats or goodies. We seldom got candy. I remember my two sisters, Ruth and Ann, going to the store and buying one sucker. We took turns sucking on it as we walked home. I remember a few times mom baking what she called tea cakes
, which would be a welcome treat. We usually had a cow for milk and butter. Mom would sell most of the cream and eggs in order to buy staples, such as sugar, flour, corn meal etc.
Hog killing time was a real treat. We often had hogs and as soon as the weather turned cold, we would have fresh meat. Mom would render the lard and make sausage, a big treat. I remember getting the hog bladder for a balloon. There were a few times when we had
