About this ebook

In her first book, Your Destination Is Not Your Location, Laverne Booker speaks to those who have lost their way spiritually. She has endured some great obstacles in her life and would like to encourage those who may think God doesnt hear their cry for help. She believes its about rising above your situation and finding your way back to the Father, who allows His grace and mercy to shine upon us each and every day. No matter what the circumstance or situation may be, the battle is not yours. God still has your back in every situation and circumstance in your life. Seek and you shall find; knock and the door shall be open. You have not because you ask not!

Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 17:1–7 NKJV

Now the Philistines gathered their armies together to battle, and were gathered at Sochoh, which belongs to Judah; they encamped between Sochoh and Azekah, in Ephes Dammin. And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and they encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in battle array against the Philistines. The Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, with a valley between them. And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. And he had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders. Now the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels; and a shield-bearer went before him.

    History

Samuel (name of God)—the earliest of the great Hebrew prophets (after Moses) and the last judge of Israel. Samuel led his people against their Philistine oppressors. When he was an old man, Samuel anointed Saul as the first king of Israel and later anointed David as Saul’s successor. Samuel is recognized as one of the greatest leaders of Israel (Jeremiah 15:1; Hebrews 11:32).

If I were to give this text a title, it would be Arm for Battle.

    Meanings

Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary defines arm as a word frequently used in the Bible as a symbol of God’s power, strength, or might (Psalm 89:13; Isaiah 53:1). The most common reference is to his deliverance during the exodus, when he redeemed Israel from bondage in Egypt (Psalm 77:15; Isaiah 63:12).

Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary defines battle as armed combat between two enemy forces.

Now, I know that some of us have some enemy forces up in this place—amen, saints? Well, you’d better learn how to arm yourself for the battle, because if you are a vessel chosen by God, you’d better believe you will have some battles to fight, some hills to climb, and some valleys to cross.

The Philistines stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, with a valley between them (Samuel 17:3). Now, that wasn’t close range. The valley between them was a long, broad sweep of land between parallel hills or mountain ranges.

I want to talk to you about being armed for battle. If a hurricane came through right now, would you be armed for the battle? If the newscaster announced a state of emergency and the need to evacuate the area because the hurricane on the horizon is estimated to hit about noon, we would all take cover. We would take the necessary steps to secure our homes and protect our children—except those of us who take life for granted and don’t believe what has been said. Those people will be left exposed to the hurricane, just as some of us will be locked out of the kingdom when God arrives because we don’t believe what has been said.

Some of us think we have arrived where God wants us to be when we start coming to church, but to tell you the truth, some of us are nowhere near where God wants us to be, for some of us are playing with the Word of God. Some of us come in these church doors Sunday after Sunday professing, speaking in tongues, thinking we know how to give a word—and yet we haven’t even read the Word. A person like this is just copycatting what someone else said, and that person could be wrong. This is why we can’t win our worldly battles; we are allowing the enemy to steal our focus away. Come on! We’d better learn how to fast and pray for others so that God can give us favor over our own battles (bills, relationships, marriages, children). Some of us had better check ourselves before we wreck ourselves. The Word of God says there are gifts without repentance.

We all think God is talking to us. Yeah, he is, but some of us are not listening to what he is saying because we don’t want to hear the right stuff. If we would just try the Spirit by the Word of God, we could recognize when God is talking to us.

If a fire were to break out, you would call 911, but before the fire department could arrive, the 911 operator would have to ask you a few questions. The responders—in this case, the firemen—must prepare themselves for the battle. They must first grab their armor: their fire-protective jackets, rubber boots, and fire trucks. Then they would need to know an address—where the fire is—and a few other questions would likely follow that. If the preparations were not made, how effective could they be?

Let’s discuss the 9/11 World Trade Center tragedy. As I was sitting at my desk on that clear morning of September 11, 2001, I heard a woman in the office say Oh my God! A plane hit the World Trade Center! Well, my brother worked in the World Trade Center. As I looked out my office window, I could see the black smoke in the distance, but it didn’t connect for me. I was still not thinking that my brother was in that building. It was his first day back to work after a church revival in Virginia. I sat back down at my desk, and then I heard someone say again, Oh my God! Another plane has hit the second building. Then my mother called, and my sisters called and asked if I’d tried to get in touch with Sean. I did try then, but to no avail. There was no answer on his cell phone.

My oldest brother trampled through the debris in New York week after week; month after month, he searched the hospitals to find our brother. Can you imagine what went through his head every day, searching with no hope and no sign of a body? A year later, the body parts of my brother were finally found and buried. Although we weren’t prepared for this battle, you can rest assured that Sean was prepared for his battle. The morning he returned from his trip, he’d stopped by my mom’s house and told her that there was a lot of evil coming. I don’t want to be here when it comes, he said. I’m not afraid to leave here. He was ready.

My brother was rooted in the Word. He lived for God, and he died for Him.

Don’t you know that faith is the substance of things hoped for and evidence of things not seen? Saints, some battles are not ours; you have to trust and believe:

2 Corinthians 5:7 nkjv We walk by faith, not by sight.

God is my rock, in whom I take refuge … my stronghold, my refuge, and my savior—from violent men you save me (2 Samuel 22:3 niv).

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall (Psalm 55:22 niv).

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10 niv).

    But those who
