    CHAPTER ONE

    PIPER

Tea? Lucy asked, handing me a steaming mug.

    Thanks. Where is everyone?

She took a sip out of her own mug. They're outside messing about. At least three mornings a week the boys go outside and work on their fighting skills. The only reason they don't invite me is because they know I'll kick their ass.

I smiled at her. Her feistiness had continued to come out over the week that I had spent with them. She was definitely the baby of the group, but that didn't mean that they handled her with kid gloves. She didn’t need them to, and they knew it.

So how have you been feeling? I mean about all this? She extended her hands around her.

I shrugged. I don't really know what to think. I mean, this is all so new to me. Being a psychic has been something that I've grown up with. I knew about it since I was a child. And sure, my grandmother talked about shifters, but I never thought any of it was real. Part of me doesn't even think she actually understood it all herself, but Alastair says that she came here. So she must have known something. But then that leads to an even bigger question, why didn't she tell me? She could have clued me in. The whole ‘your husband will be a shifter’ thing would have been a lot easier to handle.

She shrugged. But maybe it is because of Noah? I mean, you said that she told you about him. But she could have led you straight to him, and she didn't. That says something.

I nodded as I took another sip. The warm liquid ran down my throat as I thought about her lack of honestly. I knew exactly what it meant. My grandmother thought the shifters were dangerous. And as much as she wanted me to find my happily ever after, she knew that it wouldn't come without sacrifices. My current one being school. No one here wanted me to go back to college. Even though it was just half a semester. They thought I should drop out. Noah even offered to get Internet at the house just so I could take online classes. But it wasn't that simple. How would I explain it to my dad? He didn't even believe that my grandmother was a psychic, how could he believe that there was an entire civilization of shifters living among us? I knew that he couldn't. Besides, I couldn’t tell him. It was against the rules. I hadn’t gotten over that yet, lying to my father. It would be too hard.

You’re thinking again. I can tell. You get this little crease between your eyebrows. What’s going through your head?

I shook my head. Nothing important. Let’s go watch the guys. Their bear sides still fascinated me. And Noah demonstrating his brute strength was pretty hot, bear or man.

She set her mug down on the kitchen table and I followed her out to the front yard. There in the morning light we saw two brown bears going at each other like they were trying to kill one another. There was blood on the ground. I wish they wouldn’t get so brutal.

Lucy gave me a weird look. Why, because you think the wolves are going to go easy on them? Piper, they’re doing this to protect you. Besides, it’s good to let their bear side out. Fight for their territory, or for their mate.

Mate. That was the word I’d been hearing a lot lately. About how Noah and I might fulfill some crazy prophecy about two magical creatures leading the rest into some type of revolution. As if my life wasn’t already insane enough.

I watched Jackson, the bigger of the two, take a swipe at his opponent. He got across Noah’s shoulder. Although I couldn’t see the contact from where we were standing, I knew that he had hit him good because Noah backed away. But just as Noah lowered his head he barreled straight towards Jackson, pushing him off balance as he stood on his hind legs. In the blink of an eye suddenly Noah was the victor, standing over Jackson, who was barely moving underneath them. Lucy clapped as I continued to drink my tea. I didn’t like to show my appreciation that Noah was the strongest. Everybody already teased us about how in love we were; I didn’t need to rub it in that Noah was the only bear with a mate.

I averted my eyes from Lucy, knowing that she would strip next and make one of them play fight with her. She had more energy than the two of them combined. But she never won. I had to guess it was some type of submissive nature. She was the youngest, and the newest bear. I stood on the pavement of the front driveway and watched Jackson and Noah run off to the words to find their clothes. I appreciated that everybody around here didn’t just get naked all the time. Lucy was the only one with no shame. When Noah was naked with me, other things besides his bear were on his mind. And that’s just the way I liked them.

Jackson was still a mystery to me. He spent a lot of time away from the manor. Sometimes I thought that no one but Lucy worried about him. She wondered if he wasn’t careful enough with their secret, or maybe she thought he would be targeted by the wolves. But part of me felt like he was on some type of mission, whether that be self-discovery, or if Alastair had sent him, I wasn’t sure. I just could tell that something was different about him, but I wasn’t going to push my luck. If he had something going on, he would tell Noah. And that was good enough for me. As I watched Noah emerge from the trees in human form, he had a broad smile across his face. He loved showing off, especially in front of me. Jackson came out right behind him and smacked him on the back of the head before tearing off towards the house. Noah was right on his heels. Lucy cheered from behind me as I chewed on my bottom lip. My vision was becoming cloudy, and I knew that could only mean one thing.

    CHAPTER TWO

    NOAH

I watched as the mug fell from her hands, shattering on the pavement. She was having a vision. Lucy got to her before I did, catching her before she fell to the ground. Lately she would sometimes lose consciousness during a vision; she said it was new to her. Alastair thought it had something to do with the fact that she was now around shifters. Her psychic abilities had been amplified times a thousand since she’d been here. She’d had more visions in the past week than she said she had in the past five years.

Lucy sat on the ground, cradling Piper in her arms. I carefully shifted her out of the way and took her place. I slowly ran my fingers across her face and down through her beautiful silky hair. If her eyes hadn’t been open it would almost be like she was sleeping. But instead she was just frozen in time. I would just have to wait for her to wake up. Sometimes that seemed like forever. But luckily this time she took a deep breath and the light returned to her eyes, panic on her face as she obviously realized what had happened. Oh my God, Noah! We need to talk to Alastair, now.

Jackson and Lucy exchanged worried glances but helped her up.

What did you see? Lucy asked her, putting a hand on her shoulder.

I’m sure we’ll all know soon enough.

We helped her to the house and walked directly up to Alastair’s study. He was sitting by the fire, reading a book. As soon as we walked in, he shut it and moved towards us. Sit her down on the couch. What was it this time? he asked her.

Wolves. At least two dozen of them. They were fighting bears, I assume you guys, but there were more of them. And we were losing.

Worry etched around his eyes. Where were you?

Here. It was all on the lawn outside of the manor. There was blood everywhere! And that bald guy, he was going towards the front door. I think he was talking about me, about how he wanted that girl. About her powers. Why can’t they just leave us alone? She dissolved into tears as anger coursed through my veins. No one was going to touch her, not while I was alive.

    She was mine.

Jackson moved away, running his hands through his hair. Lucy sat down next to her, taking Piper’s hands up in her own. "I don’t know. But we’re going to figure this out, right, Alastair? Isn’t it time to involve the other
