MANDRIE SI PREJUDECATA, publicat pentru prima oara pe 28 ianuarie 1813, este cel mai cunoscut si apreciat roman scris de Jane Austen si, totodata prima comedie romantica din istoria romanelor.
In acelasi timp a devenit unul dintre cele mai citite si vandute romane din istorie. Autoarea a lucrat la el intre 1796 si 1797 sub titlul provizoriu FIRST IMPRESSIONS. Asemeni volumelor SENS AND SENSIBILITY (Dragoste si ratiune) si NORTHANGER ABBEY (Manastirea Northanger) activitatea de creatie s-a desfasurat in Steventorn, Hampshire. Titlul final i-a fost inspirat din volumul CECILIA de Fanny Burney, pe care Jane Austen o admira foarte mult.
"Este un adevar universal recunoscut ca un burlac, posesor al unei averi frumoase, are nevoie de o nevasta". Este fraza memorabila cu care incepe volumul si piatra de temelie a intregii intrigi. Este povestea independentei si curajoasei Elizabeth Bennet, una dintre cele cinci surori care trebuie sa ia in casatorie pe bogatul dar arogantul Mr. Darcy. Ceea ce urmeaza este una dintre cele mai frumoase, amuzante, naturale si incantatoare, inteligente, savuroase curtare cunoscuta in literatura, scrisa de talentata Jane Austen, la numai 21 de ani! Este unul dintre cele mai ecranizate romane din istoria literaturii.
