    1: SUNDAY, MAY 3RD 2015

The morning sun bathed the parking lot in shadows as Skyler parked his car at the restaurant he worked at. A dark, large, truck sat in the same lot farther away. The truck was something he had seen throughout the last week. He knew it belonged to one of the construction workers that were building on a deck. Seeing the truck was out of the ordinary for this day, as it was Sunday. Skyler never saw the owner of the truck because none of it was his business.

The cool air hit Skyler as he got out of the car. As he threw the door shut, his eyes went to the truck, and noticed something move around in the back tinted window. Walking to the front door, he pulled the keys out of his pocket, and glanced one last time at the truck and the dark figure. Inside the restaurant, he went about his work by going to his office and grabbed a list. First, Skyler went to the bar to look at what they needed. As he was studying one of the bottles, the sound of the door opening caught his attention. Setting the bottle on the counter, his eyes focused on a rugged looking man, a man that could almost pass for homeless.

I’m sorry, we’re not open until eleven.

I know, sorry. I uh, I’m working on your deck. He made his way, by many tables, to the bar.

Oh, that’s your truck out there?

Yeah, sorry. I uh, well, my friends and I went out last night and drank a lot. I don’t remember driving here.

    They let you drive.

My head hurts and my mouth is dry. Do you mind if I have some water, and do you have any aspirin?

    Sure, sit down.

My name is Buck, he said as he sat with his hand outstretched.

Skyler. A soft smile went across his face. A Ruff callous hand gripped tightly the softer one of Skyler’s. Their eyes were locked, and as Skyler gazed into those caramel sad eyes, he wanted to comfort the man. Slipping his hand away, he reached for a beer glass and the soda gun. The glass filled up with water, and he sat it in front of Buck.

Thank you. You the only one here? Buck took a drink.

    Yeah, I’m doing inventory.

    You a manager or something?

    Yes, I am.

    What are you, like, twenty-one?

No. I’m twenty-five. I’ve seen your truck out there in the mornings lately. You’re dedicated.

Yeah, I guess. He took another drink. The aspirin?

Ibuprofen would be better, let me go see if there is any in the office. Walking out from behind the bar, he passed by Buck on his way to the office. He couldn’t help but check the man out. Buck looked like a bum with his shaggy dark brown hair and unkempt beard. It was hard to see any features of his face, but Skyler thought he would look better with the beard trimmed or gone all together. When it came to Buck’s eyes, they really pulled Skyler in.

In the office, he found the ibuprofen and made his way back, setting it in front of Buck.

Thank you. Buck opened it and popped a few.

Would you like some breakfast? For some reason, Skyler didn’t want him to leave just yet.

    I thought you weren’t open.

We aren’t, but I was a cook at a lot of other places. The cooking staff won’t be here until nine to set up for lunch, so we still have a few hours.

I don’t know if I could ask you to do that.

It’s no problem. I didn’t eat anything this morning so I could use something.

Sure. I’d like that. A small smile snaked across his face.

I was thinking just eggs and bacon. Does that sound okay?

    Yeah, great.

As he started to walk away, he stopped in front of the kitchen door. Turning back, he looked at Buck. Do you want to come back with me? It would be boring out here. We could talk.

He shrugged his shoulders. Why not. He grabbed his water and followed Skyler into the kitchen.

Skyler didn’t know exactly why he was cooking for this man as he moved around the kitchen, finding everything he needed. Something made him want to help Buck. Seeing Buck sleeping in his truck day after day wasn’t normal behavior.

You know I’ve never been to this place, Buck started. I hear it’s popular but expensive.

The stove ignited. Well, we were expensive when we first opened, but our prices have changed for the better. People are more accepting now. That’s why we’re adding on. The bacon sizzled as he placed them in the pan.

So you have live entertainment here?

Talking about the stage we are adding to the deck? We do have some every now and then. A lot of local talent. It helps them and brings in their own fans. Sometimes it can be too loud though, so the owner thought it would be better for them outside.

    Customers complain?

    Yeah, especially the entitled ones.

    Get a lot of them?

Yeah, they are usually the rich ones, or the ones with chips on their shoulders.

That’s why I like working out of the way of customers. I don’t have to deal with that shit.

Eh, you get used to it. You just smile through it.

The customer is always right thing?

Actually the customer isn’t, but you have to make them think they are.

    I don’t understand.

You just have to steer the situation to make them feel better. We can’t just cave at everything.

    You good at that?

I think so…. The bacon was popping as he moved it around. I like your tattoos. Skyler had noticed the tattoo in the shape of a grenade on Buck’s left hand. It exploded on one side into a mushroom cloud and went up the arm to the bottom of a crucifix. The crucifix was surrounded by barbed wire and had a tattered ribbon around it. On the ribbon were the words, ‘Never Forgotten.’ Finding some plates, Skyler moved the bacon over. I’m afraid to get a tattoo.

    Buck laughed.

The eggs cracked open and fell into the bacon grease. I know I’mma baby. But also it’s permanent.

When the eggs were done, he placed two on Buck’s plate, and one on his. He handed the plate to Buck with a fork.

Great, thanks, I like sunny side up and crunchy bacon.

    Me too. Skyler smiled.

    I appreciate this. I haven’t had a good breakfast in a while.

Well, you’re welcome. Skyler began eating.

You won’t get in trouble for this?

No, it’s not a big deal. Now if I made a lot of food, then probably. Besides the owner likes me.

Buck was quiet for a moment while he ate. Are you gay?

Skyler was shocked. What a question.

Sorry, it’s just. I know about the owner. And with the way you look.

    How do I look?

Well, your hair for one thing.

    What!?

That shaved on the sides and then a lot on top with all that gel.

It’s not a gay hair style. And it’s not gel it’s paste.

Whatever. All the guys I’ve seen with it are gay.

    And how many is that?

    Well … that doesn’t matter, it’s gay.

    Uh-huh.

    Then those diamond studded earrings.

It’s not gay to wear earrings.

And you’re just too well groomed.

So, because I don’t want to look like you, I’m gay.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t have a problem with it.

I’m sure. Skyler rolled his eyes.

    So you are.

    Why do you care?

Well, the owner’s gay … so are you two?

    No. He’s married.

    What? But he’s gay?

    To a guy.

    What?

God, here I go out of my way and be nice to you and this is what I get.

    Hey, I’m just asking questions.

    Yeah, I’m sure.

I guess I should get going. He set the plate down. The crunchy bacon was still there so he picked them up in his hand. Thanks again. He walked out of the kitchen.

Skyler sighed. Sometimes he wondered why he even bothered. Everyone seemed to disappoint him in some way. Trying to be nice never seemed to work. People would just walk over him when he was nice. His appetite went away and he cleaned up the mess that he had made. After putting it out of his mind, he finally went back to his first task for the day. It wasn’t too long until the cooking staff arrived.

The restaurant began to get busy with the employees all in the kitchen. Skyler’s staff arrived a few hours after the kitchen for service, but one didn’t show up.

Bridget, have you seen Jeff? Skyler asked one of his servers.

No, and I haven’t heard anything. But you know how he is. Probably stoned out of his mind. I don’t know why you don’t just fire him. It would give me more tables.

    I think you know why.

That’s stupid, couldn’t he keep business and personal separate.

    I guess not.

You should tell him about the way Jeff acts.

I’ve told him, and he says he will talk to him, but I don’t think he does.

    Well, I’ll take his tables.

    I know you will.

However, it wasn’t long after their discussion that Jeff walked in. When Skyler saw him, he followed Jeff to the back room.

Jeff where were you? Skyler asked.

Chill out brah. I’m here. He was putting his stuff away in a small locker.

Yeah, and leaving prep for everyone else.

There’s, like, still about five minutes left. I can do somethin’.

It’s already done. You’re getting a small section today.

    Sounds good to me.

You don’t care at all, do you?

Hey, my parents wanted me to get a job, so here I am. Allen was nice enough to give me one. He had a stupid grin on his face.

Just get ready. Skyler walked off.

    Oh, Sky, looking good today.

Skyler didn’t pay him any mind.

As the day continued, he was at the bar when he noticed his boss walk in. The man was tall and had a confident stride as he walked up.

Hey, Skyler, how’s it going today? He gave Skyler a bright smile.

Oh, Allen, I didn’t think you would be in.

Yeah, I thought I would stop by. Sorry for making you work today, but Kevin had an emergency. He rubbed his salt and pepper beard.

It’s fine. I wanted to do inventory anyway.

    Sooo, how’s Jeff doing.

The dirty look on Skyler’s face told Allen everything.

Just put up with him. When school starts up, he isn’t going to be working here anymore.

What is going on with him Allen?

Look, his parents are one of our regulars, and they have money. They asked for a favor.

Wait, they are rich, but they want their son to work.

They want him to get a taste of—

    Peasant life.

    Don’t say it like that.

    Is that all this is?

Of course … why? Is anyone saying anything?

    Allen?

    It’s nothing Skyler.

Maybe to you, but what of Daniel?

    Nothing is going on.

I hope there isn’t. But he was late again today, he wasn’t here for prep. He’s making everyone else do the work.

Just keep giving him a few tables and that’s it.

He’s been rude to the customers and I’ve had to make it okay.

    Still?

He did it a few days ago, or have you talked to him since then.

    I’ll talk to him again.

    Are you really talking?

    Stop it, Skyler.

Just hypothetically, if you are doing anything, you better watch out.

Nothing is going on. Now, I’ll take him to the office and talk to him.

    Maybe I’ll go with you.

No, no need for that. He walked off.

Skyler sighed and continued to work.

Five o’clock came around, and it was time for Skyler to go home. As he left, his mind went to Buck, and realized the bluntness wasn’t really that bad, and he may have overreacted. A soft breeze washed over him as he stood near his car looking over to where the truck used to be. He knew what it was like to be at the bottom.

Not wanting to have any tension between them, Skyler drove to the store thinking he could make Buck supper some night. He stood near the meats, thinking of what he could buy when a friend walked up to him.

Now, what are you doing here?

Skyler turned to the voice. Hey, Tomas. His eyes met his friend. Lookin’ slick. Just get your hair cut?

You always notice these things. His black hair was faded on the sides and parted over with pomade. So, what’s up?

I was thinking of making something nice for dinner tomorrow night.

    Could I join you?

Well, I’m planning to invite someone.

Since when did you start dating?

I’m not really dating. It’s just a friendly dinner.

    Bummer.

    Maybe some other time.

So are you hoping maybe this friendly dinner may turn to more?

No, he laughed. I just want to help him out.

This is the first person I have seen you take any interest in.

Maybe he reminds me of an abandoned puppy dog.

    Then you think he’s cute?

Skyler laughed again. In the way a dog is cute, he’s even shaggy like one.

He shook his head. Well, good luck with that. I should get back to work.

    Bye Tomas.

Tomas waved as he walked away.

    2: MONDAY, MAY 4TH

Skyler went into work early again, hoping to see Buck’s truck. In the parking lot, he saw the dark vehicle sitting near the new deck. Quiet surrounded Skyler as he shut off the car. Eyeing the truck, Skyler looked to see if anyone was inside. Movement caught his eye, and he decided to put his plan in motion. With two coffees sitting in his cup holders, he picked one of them up, and grabbed a pin from his breast pocket. He began writing down his address and a time on the cup. Grabbing the second coffee, he left his vehicle, went over to Buck’s truck, and saw a body in the back seat. He knocked on the window and noticed as Buck sat up quickly. The truck shook as Buck made his way to the front seat and rolled down the window.

What is it? Buck’s voice was deep and gravelly.

Look, I want to make up for yesterday.

Why? It was me who was … I don’t know the word, he cleared his throat.

    Abrasive, Skyler supplied.

Yeah, I guess, the roughness in his voice went away.

It’s fine. I could have handled it better too.

I was just wondering that was all.

    Well, I brought coffee.

    Oh, thanks. He took it.

So, I’ve seen you here this early a lot through the week.

Buck gave him a harsh look.

I was wondering if you would like to have a home cooked meal?

What, so you can get in my pants.

Skyler sighed, Never mind. He walked away.

    Hey!

Skyler didn’t turn back and went inside. He locked the door and went about his work.

The day dragged on until the night manager came in, around five, to relieve Skyler. At his town house, he looked in his fridge to see the food that he had bought the day before, and wondered if he should cook it for himself, or just order a pizza. For now, he was going to take a long bath. Pouring a glass of red wine, he went upstairs to his bathroom.

As he lay in the tub with bubbles floating on the surface, his thoughts became sexual. It had been a long time since he had been with anyone, and his hand found its way to his hole. His finger began to slide in, and a small moan left his lips. The loud sound of the doorbell jerked him out of his trance; he removed his hand and sat up. He sat there for a second when the doorbell rang again. Water splashed around him as he moved to grab a towel. Stepping out, he dried off, and then wrapped the towel around his waist. It sounded like an elephant running down the stairs as he made his way to the front door; the bell rang again. When he opened it, he saw Buck standing there holding a pack of beer.

Buck what are you doing here?

I saw you had wrote your address on the coffee cup and the time to arrive, so I did.

    What?

I brought beer because since you’re gay I didn’t think you’d have any.

He began to shut the door, and Buck stopped him.

It was a joke. Just like the one this morning. You didn’t let me explain, and you locked the doors to the restaurant…. Why are you naked?

I was taking a bath. I didn’t think you would show up. Why didn’t you try when we were open?

Because I decided I would surprise you. Are you going to let me in?

    I didn’t cook anything.

    I can wait.

Skyler sighed, opened the door fully, and stepped to the side letting Buck walk in.

The kitchen is just over there.

I can see it. Buck walked through the living room to the kitchen.

With a roll of his eyes, Skyler shut the door. In the kitchen, he watched as Buck put the beer in the fridge.

You gonna cook naked or what? Buck asked as he shut the fridge.

Skyler scoffed, and made his way up the stairs to his bedroom. After putting on some clothes, he heard the TV as he started to make his way back down.

He saw Buck watching baseball and drinking a beer. Made yourself at home did ya?

Well, it’s that saying right? Something ‘casa’?

Yeah, but I’m supposed to say that.

Whatever. He took a drink. So you going to cook or what?

Why did I agree to this?

Because you want to get in my pants. Ha!

Skyler shook his head, went into the kitchen, began to get everything out, and started to cook. He grabbed another glass of wine to calm his nerves. Every once in a while, Buck would walk back to the kitchen and grab another beer.

So what are you making? Buck asked.

    Chicken Marsala.

    Don’t think I’ve tried that.

    Well, you’ll like it.

Well, depending on how I like it, maybe I’ll let you suck my dick.

Skyler sighed, It’s not funny anymore.

I think it is. He went back into the living room.

Once the food was ready, Skyler made Buck sit in the kitchen.

So, since you’re here, why don’t you tell me something about yourself? Skyler asked.

Like what? He started to eat.

    "I don’t
