    TUDOR COMPARISON:

    Chapter 1

The air was crisp and the moon was bright as the two friends made their way through the city. There wasn’t a sound on the street. Not a whisper to indicate there was another soul in London as they swept beneath the streetlamps. Still, they glanced over their shoulders. Still, their bright eyes roved over the flickering shadows, staring into the darkness beyond.

Even dressed so casually, there was something strange about them. Even trying so hard to blend in, it was easy to see they were just a little different than the rest of the world. It wasn’t just the unnatural grace with which they moved. It wasn’t just the late hour, or their understated beauty, or the silent confidence with which they swept along the misty road.

Maybe it was the way the man twitched his fingers, redirecting security cameras to leave no witnesses to their nocturnal outing. Maybe it was the faint glow in the woman’s palms, the way her hair floated like a cloud behind them and her blue eyes seemed to be dancing with an inner light.

They walked several miles without speaking, cutting through the residential neighborhoods before finally crossing the bridge. At which point they turned with perfect synchronicity, as if it was something they’d rehearsed countless times before.

A late night cab drove by and they turned their heads. A waiter at a twenty-four-hour diner threw out the trash, and they crossed to the other side of the street. The silence might have been oppressive to some, but they seemed well used to it. In fact, it seemed to almost propel them forward. As if they were waiting for something. A secret signal the rest of the city would never hear.

Then, all at once...the girl sneezed.

    Kerrigan.

Gabriel said the name like a curse, shooting her a pained expression before instinctively glancing behind them. The street was deserted. Only a lone drunk, making his way back home.

Sorry for breathing, she answered, without a hint of apology. You know how I get with those magnolias, so why did you steer us down Clifton Street?

Because it happened to be in the opposite direction of the men with guns camped outside our block, he fired back. Why were you trying to turn towards King’s Cross?

She shot him a nasty look behind her waves of raven hair. Because it happens to be where I keep my Spanish passport, as well as being a rather large railway station. Not sure if you’ve heard of it...

King’s Cross is one of the first places they’re going to look for us, if they haven’t searched there already. He slowed his pace ever so slightly, glancing down at the top of her head. I know you have ways out of the city. I do as well. But the PC knows them. We have to try something else.

All right, then what exactly did you have in mind? she asked shortly, still struggling a bit to keep up with his long strides. Where were you going before we ran into each other?

Easy. He flashed a bright smile and grabbed her arm in the same moment, pulling her off the main street. The airstrip.

IN TIMES OF TROUBLE, Rae and the rest of the friends had leaned on what they affectionately called the ‘twisted siblings’ many times before. When they found themselves fleeing the Bavarian police, Angel had ducked into what the others had thought was an incense parlor and emerged with fresh travel documents and the keys to a getaway car. When they found themselves grounded by a bomb threat in Tanzania, Gabriel had pulled out his cell phone and offered to babysit the prime minister’s dog in exchange for safe passage on the man’s private yacht.

There was no shortage of whimsical disguises, secret compartments, false identities, underground connections, and fantastical escapes. Whether it was vanishing into the sewers or floating away on a ‘borrowed’ dirigible, Rae often thought that the siblings played the part of secret agent far better than she and the others could ever hope to achieve. That being said, there was something about the way Gabriel said ‘the airstrip’ that filled her with an instinctual feeling of dread.

Quite possibly because the last time they’d come to said airstrip she’d been plied with tequila, accused of high treason, and subsequently manacled in the back of her husband’s car.

Wait a second... She trailed along with wide eyes as Gabriel pulled her through a twisting maze of side streets and back alleys. Even with her night vision tatù everything had begun to look the same, but he seemed to know where they were going. You mean the same airstrip as before?

    That’s right, sweetheart.

Why do pet names make me want to strangle him?

She dug in her heels, straining against his grip on her wrist as they vanished further and further into the labyrinth of shadowy service corridors and fire escapes. If you’re so sure the PC will check the trains, what makes you think they won’t check the airstrip as well?

Because they don’t know it exists, he answered brightly. Despite their years of service, he and his sister had never quite unpacked from their previous life. Angel might guess but, lucky for us, she sleeps like the dead and won’t suggest it until morning.

Rae cast a wistful glance back towards the main road, but reluctantly allowed herself to be pulled along, muttering under her breath. ...lucky me.

They came to a stop in back of a brick building with the words ‘London Utilities’ stamped in large letters across the side. She stared up in wonder as Gabriel released her long enough to reach into his pocket and pull out a set of keys. Then, with a skill so casual it was sure to send Carter to an early grave, he unlocked the door and pulled her inside.

What is this? she hissed. What are we doing here?

He released her quickly but never stopped moving, making his way at once to a series of file cabinets along the wall. Within seconds he was rifling around, pointing blindly to the far side of the room.

The county commissioner has an office here. Check the safe.

Rae froze where she stood, wishing very much she’d gone to King’s Cross. Alden, so help me—

Just check the safe, Rae. He quickly scanned through a set of papers before pulling out a specific file. "The password’s Doris."

She paused halfway there, staring at him across the room. You’re kidding.

He glanced up for only a split second, eyes dilated with that tunnel-vision focus they got whenever they were risking their lives. Why would I joke about something like that?

You know the password to the county commissioner’s safe?

It was his paternal grandmother, he murmured, scanning the file with a flashlight held in his teeth. I also know the names of his pets, his children, and his mistress’ social security code. But we hardly have time to try all of those. In you go.

With a flick of his fingers, he unlocked the door from across the room and politely held it open. She gave him a long look before stalking inside.

Sure enough, Doris unlocked the safe.

Inside were a stack of papers, a velvet box designed for jewelry, and a pair of keys. Rae was still staring, when her insufferable friend called out his next set of instructions.

Just take the keys. Unless you’d like the necklace as well. But you have enough sapphires, and grand larceny was never really your style.

She retracted her hand, glaring at him from across the room. "How about I just duplicate the keys? Then we don’t have to steal at all."

He was there a moment later, snatching them from the safe with a smug smile. "Because it happens to be very much my style. And besides, he opined as he cast a dark look about the office, sweeping back out into the main hall, the guy has it coming."

Wait a second... Rae followed after him, snatching the file from his hand. The county commissioner...is this about that citation you got last month?

Gabriel waved a hand over his head in a dismissive manner. Incinerate that, will you?

She stopped in her tracks, defiant. "I most certainly will not! You can’t park a hovercraft in the middle of the park, Gabriel. He was right to give you the citation."

He glanced over his shoulder and the file flew into his hand. She was still reaching out in protest as he carefully removed the paper clip and fed it into the shredder. What citation?

She rolled her eyes and stormed past him, back to the door. You’re unbelievable. Here we are, on a mission to find out who’s trying to kill us, who’s endangering my husband and my son, and you’re playing revenge games with the county clerk!

Relax, love. I’m just multi-tasking. He shut off the machine, then guided her down the hallway to an outdoor parking lot. We need to get to the airstrip. Public transportation is easily traceable, and all our cars our being watched. This is the next best thing.

"Fascinating. She looked straight at him, while he scanned around the lot. We’re in a bind in terms of transportation, and the only possible solution is to steal your mortal enemy’s car."

A pair of headlights lit up and they both turned their heads.

Mortal enemy? You think my mortal enemy would drive a Prius?

THEY DIDN’T TALK ALL the way to the airstrip—a testament in and of itself, considering the state of Rae’s nerves and Gabriel’s unique style of driving. It wasn’t until she saw the tops of the planes that she turned to him suddenly, reaching over to take his hand.

Truth...do you think this will work?

He cast her a swift look, emerald eyes glowing in the dark, then flew straight through the chained gate and screeched to a stop beside the closest hangar. We’re about to find out.

Unlike the lively atmosphere the last time they’d come, the place was fast asleep. There were a few lights on behind some of the office doors, but not a sound in the entire facility. Rae wasn’t surprised. By the time they’d made it to the airstrip, it was coming on three in the morning. She hadn’t expected a welcoming committee, and was actually nervous about what was coming next.

"Are you sure about this? she asked for the millionth time, following Gabriel up a set of worn metal stairs to a small room above one of the furthest open-air hangars. What if he—"

I’ve asked for bigger favors than this.

Why does that not surprise me?

Without another word, the two climbed to the top of the landing. Rae lifted her hand to knock, but Gabriel didn’t pause before flicking his fingers and unlocking the metal bolts inside the door. It popped open without a sound and they slipped inside, silently gazing into the room.

There was a bed and a dresser and not much else. Several pictures were stuck in a mirror on the wall, but they were so faded from sun it was hard to make out many details. A charger and a cell phone had been tossed into the corner, but neither looked like they’d been touched in a long time.

Rae’s eyes swept over each detail before zeroing in on the bed. All that was visible was a single tuft of blonde hair, glowing silver in the shaft of moonlight leaking in from the window. The tangled shape of a man was buried somewhere beneath blankets. However, given the steady, shallow breathing, he apparently slept like the dead. She was still debating the best way to wake him, when Gabriel reared up and kicked hard in the center of the bed.

There was a muffled gasp. A flash of silver.

    Wh—

The next thing she knew, Gabriel was kneeling beside the bed. One hand was clamped over Wyatt’s mouth, the other was wrapped firmly around his wrist. Those blue eyes shot open, piercing the dark. A knife clattered to the ground. There was an exasperated smile.

Why can’t you ever just call?

Gabriel grinned and released him, plopping down on the bed in the same instant.

Like you’d answer your phone. He cast a dubious glance at the metallic carcass in the corner. I’m fairly sure that died sometime in the nineties.

Rae was still rooted to the spot, staring at the serrated Bowie knife on the floor. The only thing that could have possibly distracted her was when Wyatt sat up and the sheets fell to his waist.

That’s when her eyebrows lifted and the internal chanting began.

    I’m married...I’m married...I’m married...

Bloody hell, man—it’s freezing, Gabriel chided. Don’t you ever wear a shirt?

Nope. Never. Don’t even own one. Wyatt raked back his hair, fixing Rae with a seductive grin. Well, if it isn’t our little bomb-maker. Come back for more supplies?

Gabriel lifted the knife from the floor, using it to point between the two. Wyatt, this is Rae.

She shook quickly out of her trance, extending her hand and attempting to speak normally. Pleased to meet you. And I’m not a bomb-maker.

Two things I volunteer in every introduction.

Startled as he’d been, the man seemed strangely accustomed to beautiful strangers dropping by his room in the middle of the night. At any rate, he shook her hand with an easy smile. Then froze.

Wait...Rae? He glanced quickly between her and Gabriel. "As in...your Rae?"

    She slowly lifted her eyebrows.

    Your Rae?

Gabriel shot a pained glance at the ceiling while Wyatt leaned back against the headboard, shaking with laughter. So how did the whole ‘killing her’ thing go? Still a work in progress?

Her mouth fell open in shock, but both men were grinning. The hint of a blush actually colored the tops of Gabriel’s cheeks as he glanced over with an affectionate smile.

    Got a little side-tracked.

Wyatt’s eyes swept her up and down, raising yet another blush. Yeah, I can see why.

    ...awkward.

So, what’s up? he asked, stretching out his long legs. It was impossible to tell if he was wearing pants under the sheets. Probably not. He didn’t seem the type. Got another order for me? He cocked his head with a grin, spilling blonde hair
