So You Want To Start A Pet Services Business - Natalia Corres

Before you start
There are many great reasons for starting a pet services business, especially if, like me, you are an introvert. I’ve always loved animals, and tend to greet them as friends wherever I find them. I’m the person at the party who is sitting in the corner with the family dog, or cat, or lizard or staring at the aquarium. So for me, it was like heaven – pets listen to your ramblings, rants, and silly stories; and don’t ask questions and don’t make judgments – they are almost always happy to see you, and they are grateful for whatever you do for them!
You may be looking for something to augment your full-time work and paycheck; you might be recently downsized
and running out of unemployment; you might be a student with some extra time that you’d like to turn into earnings; you might be burned out of your current career (like I was) and need a break from artificial stress and people sitting on your shoulder telling you what to do.
Or you might have always dreamed of owning your own business and would love for it to have something to do with working with animals.
Whatever your reason, if you are a good and trustworthy person who loves being with animals and taking care of animals, then please continue reading.
If you think this is an easy gig, with no issues and no challenges – go return this book now and get your money back.
While it is usually a simple thing, to care for other people’s pets – it is not always easy, and there are definitely challenges. And while most of the challenges have to do with the human part of this business (getting paid, bounced checks, last minute cancellations or no notice at all of cancellation) there are also still animal challenges, which I will recount changing the names of the clients and pets to protect the reputations of those living and dead.
There are many things to consider before you start a pet services business. And I will go through each and every one in as much detail as I can. Also, there will be sample forms that I have found useful, and I will give links to them so you can download and use (or customize) for your own business.
So let’s get going…onward to the next section!
[Firefly and MeiMei, two of the cats I cared for]
My experience
The small tech company where I was Chief Operating Officer was being closed due to the illness of the owner. I was pretty burned out of being the person where the buck stopped
without any of the fun, anyway, so I had some time to think about what I enjoyed doing. After over 30 years in the Tech industry I realized I needed a big change. I also realized that I truly enjoyed being with and caring for animals.
I’ve had pets in my life since I was 4 years old (I’m 62 now)…so that is a lot of pets. In my early adult years, I was the person that my friends always asked to go take care of their cat(s) and dog(s) and other pets and plants while they were away on business or vacation or emergencies with their families.
I’ve also had other people take care of my pets when we’ve
