About this ebook

Joseph Beck is once again put to the test in the face of danger. This time it comes in the form of a teenage jumper, Paul Garland, perched on the fifteenth-floor ledge. Joe responds to the call from his police scanner and rushes to the scene. But as he arrives, he realizes that there is much more at play here than just a simple jumper.

Joe senses that there is something deeper going on with Paul and feels a strong connection to him. As he tries to talk Paul down from the ledge, he delves deeper into Paul's psyche and discovers that there are secrets of the spirit realm at play.

As he grapples with these revelations, Joe begins to question everything about his own abilities and what his future holds. He wonders if his gift of sensing the supernatural is a blessing or a curse. The more he interacts with Paul, the more he realizes that this situation is not just about saving a life, but also about confronting his own demons.

NOTE: Jumper is a short story that, chronologically, falls after the full-length novel, Average Joe, but before the Roseland Chronicles books, The Gravedigger and (the upcoming book), Heart Condition.

Christopher J. Thomasson

Christopher J. Thomasson was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1972. His family permanently settled in the piney woods of East Texas when he was two years old. He discovered a love for reading and writing at a very young age and until recently, only ever wrote for himself, his family, and his closest friends. In April 2013, at the age of 40, Christopher suffered a mild heart attack while on the tennis court. Within a couple of days, he was undergoing triple-bypass surgery. Because of his love for tennis and the increased active lifestyle the sport provided, the doctors informed him of a miracle–with the clotting in his veins, his heart created new vessels to transport blood to those areas of the heart that were being depleted...and as a result of those new vessels, his heart had sustained no damage! As a result of this experience, Christopher realized that he has more to add to this life than merely existing–he has stories to share.

    JUMPER

The word hits my mind like a brick smashing through a window—the shards slicing through my mind like razors. Thankfully, almost immediately, the pain disappears. The word echoes then diminishes and is slowly replaced by static from the emergency scanner.

Calling all available units. Suspected jumper at Roseland Plaza: One-Hundred-One Broadway. The suspect is male, late teens, approximately six-foot-one. The suspect is on the fifteenth floor, east side, center window.

A laundry list of other details accompany the transmission, but my mind has switched off. Jumpers are rare in Roseland. So rare that in the thirty-four years I’ve lived here, I’ve only ever heard of one other.

Roseland holds few places suitable for a jumper with his or her eyes set on leaping to their death. A few three- and four-story buildings stand scattered here and there about the city, but for the most part, there’s no place high enough to guarantee a deadly outcome.

An exception is a place in which I’m very familiar, the only high rise structure, a building in which I was once employed: Roseland Plaza. At eighteen stories, it’s by far the tallest building between Shreveport and Dallas.

Again, that single word encompasses my focus.

    JUMPER

It’s been several years since I’d worked there, but unless there have been major changes, that particular floor and the one above it, were once rented by a local law firm that has since moved to another location. I’d bet a hundred dollars those offices were sitting empty now—just waiting on potential tenants but probably seeing them balk at the hefty costs of the lease.

    Jumper.

The word continues to rattle around in my head although the impact is not as painful.

A new voice accompanies the crinkling static from the scanner—a voice in which I’m very familiar.

    This is Porter…I’m in route.

Chief of Police, Robert Porter is a good friend—and one of only a hand-full of people that know my secrets.

    Jumper.

There it was again. At first, I thought I was mentally replicating the word myself. You know how a catchy tune can get stuck in your head
