    ONE

Kylee yawned and rolled over in the bed. For a moment, she was so sleepy that she didn’t know where she was or whose bed she was in. As she woke up, everything fully came to mind. André. She was in his house. He was on his back, softly snoring.

The lights were off in the room and she sat up as slowly and quietly as she could. She was annoyed that she’d fallen asleep. But she’d been so exhausted – and still was. Still, she hated when she broke her own rules. No sleeping over. Ever. No sleep. Period.

She moved in slow motion, moving around the bed and looking underneath it to gather all of her clothes. Once she was dressed, she left the bedroom and crept down the hall. Her heels were in her hand. She didn’t put them on until she was near the front door of the quiet house.

Kylee? André called from down the hall. He stumbled forward, as dark and nude as an ancient African prince. His dreadlocks tumbled around his head, brushing his shoulders, as he rushed towards her.

I have to go, Kylee said, admiring his toned chest covered with a thick mat of hair. I’ll see you at work tomorrow.

The cords of muscle in his legs flexed and his dick flopped as he moved but by the time he reached her, he was hard.

You can’t leave, He said, smiling slyly. He ran his fingers along his goatee.

It’s late. You and I both know that I shouldn’t get caught in here. But he was already pressing up against her. Although she was fully clothed, she felt every hard inch of him push against her.

I’m not done with you, He whispered, turning her so that she faced away from him.

She was excited. She toed off her heels and looked at the clock. It was a quarter to twelve. If they hurried, she could still leave on time.

She unzipped her skirt and let it slide to the floor. André pulled her stockings down then pressed her up against the wall. She closed her eyes when her face met the smooth, cool wall. She giggled when he pushed her legs apart.

Oh, yeah, She said on a shallow gasp, feeling herself becoming juicy before he’d even touched her. He slid his fingers inside her and her pussy pulsed around him. She moved her hips, letting herself grind against his hand. She could already feel the orgasm building up.

Oh, no you don’t, André said huskily by her ear. He slapped her hard on the ass and picked her up. The living room was a few steps away. He walked there with her and dumped her onto the couch.

A condom, She muttered, knowing he kept them in the bedroom. She didn’t take any chances.

Be right back, He said, almost running out of the room.

A lamp was on, providing a dim beam of light. She closed her eyes to avoid seeing the family photos that sat above the stone fireplace and hung on the walls. She spread her legs and let her hand roam down. Touching herself, she was amazed to find herself drenched. But that’s how she was sometimes, especially when she’d already come a little while before.

She pushed her finger inside a few times, enjoying the tease of pleasure that was just a hint of what was to come. She ran her finger along her clit and let loose a long, eager sigh while pushing her finger back inside her moist tunnel. Hearing André’s footsteps, she opened her eyes and watched his glorious body as he moved closer to her.

You know I’m gonna take care of you, He said, his long dick already sheathed in a light blue condom. He pulled her arm, and her finger slipped out of her wet heat. Wordlessly, he picked her hand up and licked her juices from each finger.

She closed her eyes and spread her legs, reaching for him with her other hand. He positioned himself above her and pushed in. She threw one leg up and around his waist and wrapped her arms around him. He grunted with each pump, his hair swinging wildly as he moved.

In seconds, his brow was covered in sweat. She closed her eyes when the orgasm hit. She hugged him close.

André! She exclaimed, biting into his shoulder. His skin was damp and bitter on her tongue but she couldn’t stop herself from gnawing him.

He gave a shout when he came and fell against her with a sigh.

Shit, She gasped, her blouse drenched in their mingled sweat.

Damn, baby, He breathed unsteadily. He leaned down and kissed her and she could taste herself on his lips. She smiled, content for the moment.

He withdrew from her and stood up. Even semi-hard, his dick was impressive.

I’m going to get rid of this condom, He said, suddenly looking very serious.

Okay. I’ll let myself out, She said, looking around for her tights and skirt. He wordlessly went to the hall and brought them to her before walking off down the hall. She dressed as quickly as she could, knowing that time was running out. She put her heels on, grabbed her purse and coat, and rushed from the house. The cold blasted her weary body and she shivered.

Her legs were wobbly and she stumbled when she approached the rickety gate that surrounded the house. Swiftly, she walked through the gate and let it swing closed behind her. Her car was parked in front of the house next door and as she fished her keys out of her purse, she heard a car pull up. Trying to be discreet, she half-turned to see a car pull into the driveway. André’s wife. She’d barely made it out on time.

A satisfied grin on her face, Kylee used the key fob to unlock her door and hurriedly got into the car. She found herself giggling as she imagined André spraying air freshener throughout the house to try to get rid of the smell of sex. He’d have to go shower, too. She knew her perfume was all over him. It was only a matter of time before his wife found out. With any luck, Kylee would be far away from him when shit hit the fan.

Late the next morning, Kylee looked at the young girl sitting across the desk from her and felt a pang of sympathy. Luz Henriquez was one of her favorite students. The senior was very smart and pretty but also very modest. In Luz, she saw the person she used to be. Her innocent days.

Are you sure you won’t reconsider? Kylee asked. She’d been calling students to her office all day, deserving students, to let them know it was time to start getting their recommendations together for their college applications. Luz had just told her that she wasn’t going to college and it disappointed her and baffled her.

I’m sure, Luz said, shrugging as if it didn’t matter. But a couple months before, when the school year had begun, Luz had already talked about being eager to apply to college.

I don’t understand, Kylee said. Her cell phone vibrated and she ignored it. She didn’t have to look at it to know that it was Clark. Ever since she’d dropped him a couple weeks before, he’d been texting and calling constantly. There was a chance that it was André but she doubted it. Clark bothered her much more than André did.

I’ve decided to get a job, Luz replied and looked down at her short, purple-polished nails. Maybe I can go to college later on.

What do your parents think about that? She’d met Mr. and Mrs. Henriquez on a few occasions. They wanted nothing but the best for their oldest child.

They feel bad, but… Luz shrugged again, still looking down at her hands. I didn’t register for the SATs, anyway. So applying for college is out of the question.

You told me you were registering. Kylee sat ramrod straight. The deadline to register was November first and I distinctly remember you telling me the week before that you were about to register.

She cursed herself for not double-checking. She’d checked on other students, though. Those who had wavered over taking the test. Now, she realized her mistake.

Look, Luz looked up and swallowed several times. Kylee saw the sadness in the young girl’s eyes. I…didn’t have the registration fee. My mother was supposed to give it to me but then she needed the money for something else… And then my cousin offered it to me but it would have been a loan I’d have to pay back and-

Kylee held up a well-manicured hand. I’ll pay it for you.

Thanks, Ms. Harris, Luz said, But I can’t take your money. And it’s always going to be like this. There’s always going to be a money shortage. There’s no point in getting the process started.

Kylee stood up, adjusted her black blouse and long, needle skirt then walked around the desk. She kneeled in front of Luz. If there was anything she loved in the world, other than her sister, it was her kids. She loved her students.

I’ll help you, Kylee said, infusing as much warmth into her voice as she could manage. I don’t mind. Anything you need.

I can’t do that, Luz mumbled. And suddenly her eyes were filled with tears.

Come here, sweetie, Kylee said, pulling the young girl up from the chair. I know how badly you want to go to college. And with your grades, I’m sure you’ll get in wherever you apply. We’ll get you set up with financial aid. With your family size, you will qualify. It won’t be easy but this is your chance and you have to take it.

Tears rolled down Luz’s light brown cheeks.

It’s going to be okay, Kylee reassured. She had plenty of money from her father that she never used, anyway. It wouldn’t be the first time she helped a student and it wouldn’t be the last. I’ll help you with the SAT fee and the college application fees. I really want this for you.

The young girl crumbled against her, sobbing. Kylee felt her own eyes fill with tears and a few spilled over before she composed herself. She put Luz away from her with a gentle smile and walked around to sit in her chair. Luz took a couple of tissues from a box on Kylee’s desk and blew her nose.

Let’s get you registered for the SATs right now, Kylee said, turning to her computer.

    But I missed the deadline.

They have a late registration deadline. We still have time. And we’ll go step by step from here on out. I will help you with everything.

Oh my God, Luz said, tearing up again. Are you sure about this, Ms. Harris? I don’t want you to-

I swear I don’t mind, Kylee assured her, flashing her a smile. She got to work on getting Luz registered for the SATs. Once Luz, still emotional, left her office, Kylee allowed herself to look at her cell phone. A call and text from Clark, as she’d suspected.

Fucking loser, She muttered under her breath. Two weeks had passed since she’d dumped him and he still wouldn’t leave it alone. As she was replying to his text, telling him to stop bothering her, another text from him came in.

She sighed and dialed his phone. He answered on the first ring.

Kylee, He answered, sounding relieved. I’m so glad you called.

You have to stop this, Clark, She muttered. Stop calling. Stop texting.

But I miss you, He said, his voice low and plaintive.

Stop acting lonely, Kylee spat out coldly. Why don’t you give your fucking wife all this attention? I sure don’t want it.

You don’t mean that, Clark said in a steady voice. You know we were so good together. That’s not something that happens every day.

Stop calling me. She said, steely, hoping it would register with him. Stop texting me. We’re through.

She hung up the phone without giving him a chance to reply again. She hated when they got clingy. It made no sense, especially when they had a wife or girlfriend waiting at home for them. Just one of the hazards of dating, she supposed with a roll of her light green eyes.

There was a knock on her office door and she put the phone away, irritated. Later, she’d change her number. For now, she’d get back to work with her students.

Stepping out of the shower, Kylee heard footsteps outside the bathroom door and frowned. Refusing to allow herself to panic, she tied her towel snugly around her body and looked around the peach-tiled room for anything that could be used as a weapon.

Other than her toiletries, peach rugs and curtains, there was only the frail curtain rod.

Deciding that throwing shampoo bottles was better than walking out empty-handed, she bent to gather a couple of them.

    Kylee? Are you home?

In relief, she leaned against the wall. It was Kaylee.

In the bathroom, Kylee said, rushing to the door and opening it.

Her sister rushed towards her, a deep frown on her beautiful face. Other than their hair styles, no one would be able to tell them apart, save for their mother and Kaylee’s husband. They were both petite and slim with light brown skin and small, high breasts. They both had light brown hair and green eyes. Kylee kept her curls long, and sometimes streaked with color. Kaylee had long since chopped her hair off, keeping it short and ironed straight.

I thought you were out of town, Kylee said. Didn’t you tell me you’d be gone all week on a buying trip?

The trip got canceled, Kaylee muttered, tapping her high-heeled boot in obvious irritation. She was a buyer for an exclusive clothing boutique and usually loved her job. The trip to Paris had been all she’d talked about for days.

    What happened?

I was supposed to go with Hannah, Kaylee said, walking up to Kylee until they were almost touching. But she said she caught her husband cheating. After that, she didn’t want to leave town.

Why didn’t she let you go on your own? You’ve done purchasing by yourself before.

It’s not that simple, Kaylee spat, glaring.

Well, spill it. Kylee was supposed to be at André’s by seven. She didn’t have time to waste.

Did you sleep with Hannah’s husband?

Of course not! Kylee yelled, instantly affronted. That old bum? Hell no.

    He’s not old.

Late forties is too old for me, Kylee assured her sister, offended. Did her sister think she had no standards?

You can’t blame me for asking, Kaylee said, the glare looking less severe. Hannah said she found messages on his phone and a thong in their room.

Do you know how big this city is? And you automatically assumed it was me. What the fuck is wrong with you?

"You flit from dude to dude because they’re not single and you’re actually asking me that?"

Kylee walked back into the bathroom and slammed the door. Kaylee should have known better. She’d never do anything to jeopardize her sister’s career. And she’d never mess with someone who was that much older than she was, either. At twenty-nine, she never crossed the ten-year gap, forwards or backwards.

Why are you being this way? Kaylee demanded through the door.

I’d never fuck your job up for you. Even if Hannah’s husband was fine and young and rich or whatever. It’s your career. It means so much to you. Kylee closed her eyes and shook her head. Yeah, she preferred men who were taken. She had her reasons. But nothing and no one came before her sister.

I-I knew you wouldn’t do it but then… Kaylee’s voice trailed off. You never used to sleep with your coworkers, either. But that’s a rule you’ve broken.

Deciding that it was time to stop confiding so much in her sister, Kylee opened the bathroom door. She could feel the scowl on her face but she couldn’t get rid of it.

Please don’t be mad at me, Kaylee said softly. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.

It’s alright, Kylee mumbled, even though it wasn’t. It stung that her twin thought so little of her.

Let me make it up to you, Kaylee said, trying to smile. Let’s go grab dinner and a movie.

Kylee didn’t smile back. I have a date tonight. But I’ll cancel it if you want me to.

Oh. No, Kaylee said quickly. We can get together on another day.

Kylee walked down the hall to her giant bedroom and her sister followed. One of her indulgences was her bedroom. She had a full canopy bed, all red silk. There were no less than a dozen pillows strewn on the bed and on the lush, carpeted floor surrounding it. The furniture was all ivory, from her dresser and bureau to her desk and bedside table. A small crystal vanity sat against the far-right wall near the only window in the room. Red, cloth roses adorned everything.

Her home, especially her bedroom, was her sanctuary. The only people allowed inside her home were family and friends. And the only other person who’d been in her bedroom was her sister.

She rushed to the walk-in closet, and went to the dress she’d had in mind earlier in the day. A hot pink strapless mini dress. It was November, and cold as hell outside, but she’d only have to go to her garage and get in the car. And hopefully there’d be a spot close to André’s house.

I can’t believe you’re going to wear that. Kaylee glowered when Kylee dropped her towel and slipped into the tiny dress. You’re going to freeze your cooch off.

Kylee put on candy black heels and unclipped her curls, letting them drop down from the top of her head.

I’m not going far, Kylee said, taking a look at herself in the floor-to-ceiling mirror that was inside the closet. Just the right amount of cleavage peaked out of the top of the dress.

She exited the closet with her sister close behind her.

    Just be careful, Kaylee warned.

I’ll be in my car most of the time. No worries. She sat down at the vanity table and looked at the array of makeup scattered on it. She just felt too lazy to put any on. She’d never relied on makeup before but it was nice to wear it at times.

I’m going to grab some dinner and then head home, Kaylee said. I hope you’re not still upset with me.

We’re good, Kylee assured her sister. You hurry up and get home.

Kaylee nodded uncertainly, staring at Kylee without making a move to leave. Kylee stood up and gave her a quick hug. They walked down the long hallway to the living room. Kaylee’s coat was tossed onto the red, leather couch. She picked it up and put it on.

After her sister had gone, Kylee rushed back to her room to grab a purse from the closet. She chose a small black one, making sure her wallet would fit inside it. She then added mints, condoms and lubricant inside the purse. Her emergency kit, as she referred to it in her mind.

She grabbed her car keys and exited the house through the side door, straight to the garage where her small, red car was parked.

She hadn’t always been a homewrecker. It hadn’t ever been something she’d planned to do. She’d been young and innocent once. And had been so in love that she winced when she thought about how stupid, dumb and in love she’d been.

His name was Russell Waller. She’d been seventeen with a fake I.D., and having a good time in the club, when she’d spotted him. She hadn’t been completely innocent but she had been a virgin. Young and naïve enough to believe it was love at first sight. Russ had been older, a senior in college, and she’d been smitten with his blond hair and blue eyes.

Within a month, she was spending almost every free moment that she could with him. He had an off-campus studio apartment that was only a ten-minute car ride away from her house. He and his roommate took turns having the apartment to themselves. On the occasions where his roommate had the apartment, she’d sneak Russ into the house or they’d have sex in her car. Her mother was usually too sad or depressed to notice that anyone other than her daughters were home. And Kaylee had been happy for her, happy that she’d found love.

Shortly before high school graduation, all the pieces of her tidy little puzzle had come apart. It had been her birthday and she’d cut her last two classes to go see Russ. They had dinner plans but she hadn’t wanted to wait. She’d gotten into her car and hurried to his apartment.

The building was always unlocked. She’d let herself in and rushed up to his apartment. After a quick knock, the door had swung open. And there’d stood a beautiful, big-breasted redhead.

Um…Is Russ here? Kylee had asked hesitantly, taking in the long T-shirt that the redhead wore. It was a shirt that she recognized because she’d worn it many times herself over the past seven months.

And who are you? Redhead crossed her arms swiftly under her gigantic breasts.

I’m Kylee, Kylee replied. She’d instantly regretted giving her name.

Oh, Redhead said with a sudden welcoming smile. You’re one of Russ’s students. He’s mentioned you before.

Kylee’s mouth had dropped so far open that it felt as if it might reach the hallway floor. Russ’s students?

Um…what? Kylee asked hoarsely. I’m not his student.

But he said… The smile had disappeared. Russ! Get out here!

Redhead turned and Russ almost ran from the direction of the bathroom. When he spotted Kylee, his pale, white skin had turned an ugly shade of red.

Kylee, He said, sounding strangled. His blue eyes were wide and round.

You said she was a student of yours, Redhead said, shoving him in the chest with nails as long as talons.

She is, He said quickly. I told you. She’s a part of my study group.

By this time, Kylee had been shaking all over. Her entire body seemed poised to topple over.

I don’t believe you! Redhead yelled shrilly. Look at her! And you, too! You look guilty as hell!

Tell her, Kylee, Russ said, clearing his throat. He put his hands in his pants pockets.

I’m his girlfriend, Kylee said, without any thought in her head. Or…I thought I was.

Redhead’s mouth dropped open and she suddenly collapsed to the floor in tears. Kylee took off running, not stopping until she was outside at her car. She got in but she shook so badly that she didn’t dare drive.

All she’d been able to think about was how she and Russ were supposed to find a place to live together after graduation. He’d said he’d loved her. He’d said he wanted to marry her. And he was taken. Everything he’d said was a lie. He wasn’t even in college. He was some kind of teacher. She’d felt so empty and so cold but the hurt suddenly slammed into her and she’d begun to weep in her car.

A knock on the driver’s side mirror made her jump. She wiped her teary face and looked to see Redhead standing beside her car, her own face streaked with mascara tears.

What is it? Kylee asked, loudly. She pushed the button to lower the window.

Look, little girl, Redhead spat, her tears still flowing. I don’t know what you think you had with my husband but it’s over now. So, get the hell away from here and don’t come back!

    I… Kylee had been speechless.

Get out of here now! The other woman screamed, drawing the attention of people walking nearby.

Kylee had started the car and sped away as quickly as she could. Instead of celebrating her birthday with people that she loved, she ended up crying all night and crying herself to sleep. She’d been wooden for days. High school graduation had been just a week later. Her father had tried to wrangle an invite but she and Kaylee had both refused. And their mother was too depressed to leave the house. Their aunt, Janet, had been the only one in the audience for them at the graduation. She’d wanted to take them to dinner but Kylee had begged off and gone home, leaving Kaylee and Janet to have dinner on their own.

After parking her car in front of the house, she noticed that Russ’s car was parked across the street. When he saw her staring, he got out of the car and crossed the street.

This motherfucker, Kylee had whispered under her breath. She refused to let him hurt her again. She’d spun dreams around this man and he’d betrayed her. He’d made a fool of her. It wasn’t something she’d ever forgive or forget.

Kylee, He’d said, a sad look on his handsome face. I’m so sorry, baby. I’m sorry.

Get away from me, Russ, Kylee had mumbled, thinking that a swift kick to his dick was the least he deserved for the way he’d broken her heart.

But I love you, He’d claimed, tears in his blue eyes. I know it’s wrong, but I love you.

And that redhead? Kylee had been seething.

Tiffani, He’d shaken his head. I don’t want her. I don’t love her anymore.

    I don’t believe you.

Why do you think I have that little studio apartment? We don’t even live together. I’m paying rent for the apartment she lives in. Our marriage is dead.

Bullshit, Kylee had muttered. You’re just a liar. I can never believe a word you say again.

I’m sorry. He’d dropped down onto his knees in the street in front of her car. I didn’t want to tell you how old I was when we met. I knew you’d never date someone who was so much older than you.

"How old are you?" She couldn’t help but ask. He’d put his arms around her legs.

Thirty. But it doesn’t matter. I love you. I want to be with you. I wasn’t lying about the way I feel about you, Kylee. Please believe me.

Still holding onto her legs, he’d hugged her, pressing his head against her
