Kindness in Philippolis

On reading Obie Oberholzer’s article on Philippolis (Peace Comes with a Smile, December 2019), I have a story to add.

My grandfather William Day came to South Africa during the Anglo-Boer War on the side of the British. Here he met an 18-year-old girl and married her. After the war, having acquired his law qualifications, he became a magistrate and was transferred to Philippolis.
