    We have been sitting in the treehouse for four days, Gabriel and I.

    There’s still food and water left inside, thanks to other teens always using the place as their personal fortress. Up in the darkness of the trees, among the farm’s many trees, the treehouse seemed like the perfect place for a first date with the guy I’d secretly loved for years.

    The fact that we chose to have that date on the night the world decided to end was an unfortunate coincidence.

    Below us, the infected are clawing at the tree in a desperate but futile attempt to reach us. I don’t think they can see us through the dense foliage, but they must be able to smell us, because with each passing hour, a few more arrive to join the group.

    Whatever these things are, whatever happened to the world, it all happened in a matter of hours. One minute I’m waiting for Gabriel to kiss me and the next the piercing screaming starts in the distance. Then the sound of cars crashing, sirens, more screams. We can’t see the street from the treehouse so we have to imagine what’s going on out there. It’s not hard to guess it’s very bad. The things
