    Even the rushing waters of the river seemed to call Garran a failure.

    The gentle blue stream he’d followed from the tower first widened angrily as it approached the canyon. Now here at the canyon’s edge, it bent hard over rocks, frothed white, and mocked him with its deep hiss as it plunged down the grays and browns of the cliffside. Foam spat at him, chilling him even more than the last breath of winter had done all morning.

    Garran had left the tower shortly after dawn. Now the sun now rode high in the bright blue sky.
