INTRODUCTION
SEX…Why is this word always seen as a taboo amongst Christians? This seemingly dangerous three-letter word amongst Christian singles seems to cause controversy when brought up in messages and/or mentioned in conversations. Dialogue surrounding sex is often stigmatized. Those who engage in these discussions are often seen as carnal and desiring; and many times, made to feel uncomfortable. Unfortunately, though, many single Christian men and women suffer silently with temptation and are traumatized with feelings of guilt and shame when they’re dealing with issues of a sexual nature. This is not God’s plan for His children. Through Christ, God has given us liberty (John 8:36; 2 Corinthians 3:17; Galatians 5:1). We do not have to be bound by sin, our past, our connections and fellowships, or our flesh. In fact, God wants us to be whole. When Christ walked the earth, everyone He encountered was made whole. One woman, in particular, comes to mind. In the book of St. John chapter four we learn of a Samaritan woman who had been involved sexually with many men. Through her conversation with Christ, we learn that she had no husband. She was single but not by choice because Jesus told her that she had already had five husbands (John 4:18). Today, she would be categorized as a prostitute. The life she lived was promiscuous. She lived her life trying to fulfill a desire. She did not necessarily want to be promiscuous, but she had a longing for something—a thirst. Unfortunately, after many men, she still had not fulfilled this desire. However, when Christ offered her water that would permanently quench her thirst, her life was changed forever. This woman learned to become a worshipper as well as an evangelist—fulfilling her God destiny because she was willing to engage in an uncomfortable conversation with Christ. Are you willing to begin fulfilling your God destiny? If so, it will take facing the giants (issues) in your life.
I am a firm believer that issues not dealt with will eventually escalate to strongholds. Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes strongholds as a fortified place; a place of security or survival; a place dominated by a particular group or marked by a particular characteristic.
The word of God lets us know that it takes spiritual weapons to pull down strongholds.
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; and having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled
—2 Corinthians 10:3-6.
Strongholds bind us; they restrict us from moving in the direction God is calling us to—the direction of victory.
Merriam-Webster dictionary defines celibacy as the state of abstaining from marriage and sexual relations; not engaging in or characterized by sexual intercourse.
Abstinence is defined as the practice of abstaining from something: the practice of not doing or having something that is wanted or enjoyable; abstention from sexual intercourse.
Typically, the word Abstinent is used when a child or an adult is a virgin who chooses not to have sex. Abstinence has traditionally been encouraged in Christian homes according to the scripture which teaches that fornication (sexual intercourse before marriage) is a sin and a work of the flesh (Ephesians 5:1-6; Galatians 5:19-21). The word Celibate is used for those who have engaged in sexual intercourse (due to sin, being widowed or divorced, etc.) and now choosing not to engage in sexual intercourse on purpose. Christians are not the only people who choose to abstain or take a vow of celibacy. It is our belief though, according to the word of God, that we should wait until marriage to engage in sexual intercourse; and that waiting pleases God.
It is time for the Christian community to have healthy conversations about an issue that has plagued the lives of many Christian single men and women. It is time for Christian singles to be made whole. In their 2009 publication, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics stated that "98%
