About this ebook
When Mr. Jacob, the District Collector of a sleepy little town in the Himalayas, shoots himself dead in his office, the only witness is Negi Ji, the calm middle-aged caretaker of the office building.
But Negi Ji’s unassuming personality hides more than a dissatisfied and disenchanted soul. Negi Ji has harbored a grudge for twenty-five years, but when he hears the last seven words of Mr. Jacob, he sees an opportunity to rewrite the story of his life.
Wronged by the only person he ever loved, he must find the meaning of those seven words and play the game right, because he is clear on what he wants.
From the world, he wants his life back; from her, he wants hers.

My Dear Reader,
I’d like to begin by thanking you. This book was mine before you downloaded it. Now it has become yours. I believe that a story evolves differently for each one of us, but in each case, it becomes richer and more vibrant when it moves from me to you. It’s like giving a painting another coat of paint. You will overlay this story with your own experiences making it richer and your own.
I’d like to thank, as always, my Mom who taught me to read and write and my Dad who taught me never to give up.
Each story, even the smallest one, grows from an idea, which may be a half-forgotten image, a long-lost friend…anyone or anything, in fact. I would like to thank Welhite Naro, a young Naga boy who I met on a train journey from Dimapur to Kolkata (Calcutta in those days.) He wanted to change the world. He wanted to uproot corruption from Naga politics. He became the young Atul Negi of this book. I hope that when he grew older and wiser, unlike Atul Negi, he found ways to achieve his dreams.
I want to thank memories that go back even farther because they make me want to tell stories.
My thanks also go out to Lydia Rodrigues, Gaurav Jain, and Barbara G. Tarn… they’ve cheered me on through my writing journey and kept me on track.
Finally, I want to thank my friend and heart, Ranjeet, for being there for me. You make my life colorful.
My dear reader, thanks once again for downloading this book. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

About the Author
Chapter 1: The Witness
If Negi Ji hadn’t arrived right at that moment, the old fir tree that stood outside the window of Mr. Jacob’s office would have been the only witness to what happened there on that dark and chilly November night.
Negi ji who had trudged up from his log cabin opened the rickety gate of the wooden enclosure around the building. It was nothing exceptional that he was doing tonight – it was pure routine. Each night, after everyone left, he would go to the dilapidated building that was the District Collector’s office and make sure that every little opening was shut.
He was proud to say that after he had checked the building not even a jungle rat could find
