    It was almost suppertime when I got home, and I was starving.  After cricket practice Zain, Dinesh and I had gone to the arcade for a while. 

    I'm home, I called as I dropped my backpack, loosened my tie, and stepped out of my shoes.  Weird, there was no smell of supper cooking, coming from the kitchen.  I headed down there.

    My mom was just sitting at the kitchen table, cradling her mug.  She was usually in full bustle mode by the time I came in after cricket.  What's up? I asked. 

    Hi Shay, she said, looking up.  The corners of her mouth turned up in a small smile, but it didn't reach her eyes.  I turned to the fridge and grabbed a coke.  You'd better have a seat.

    My eyebrows rose, Sounds serious.  Did I miss the end-of-the-world announcement?

    Your father and I are getting a divorce, she said. 

    Wow.  Her eyes flicked back and forth over my face, watching for my reaction.  I dropped into the chair opposite her.  It won't really affect us though, will it?  He was never here anyway.  He's pretty much been 'on business' in the capital for the last few years.
