Undertakers overwhelmed as death toll climbs

FUNERAL parlours and private crematoriums are inundated with work while some families wait up to a week for burial space or for a cremation.
Staff are working around the clock, and many are stressed as the death toll continues to mount.
Rishi Rooplal, a hearse driver at Protea Funeral Services, said his day started at 4am and, if he was lucky, it ended around midnight.
“Between myself and my colleague, we do about six Covid-19 funerals a day. In-between the funerals, we pick up an average of about six Covid-19 bodies, either from hospital or a person’s home to prepare for their funerals."
