There was a high demand for new plays in the Elizabethan theatre, and partly because, Shakespeare’s friend and rival Ben Jonson says he wrote the play in five weeks, “without a coadjutor, novice, journeyman or tutor”. This defines four sorts of collaborator: equal partner, apprentice, hack writer and master craftsman.
