History
Known as Rockman 2: The Mystery of Dr. Wily in Japan, Mega Man 2 was first released on December 24, 1988. Capcom did not intend to create a sequel to Mega Man due to its mediocre sales, but the production team managed to convince corporate by working concurrently on other projects. Mega Man 2 was created entirely in the team’s spare time and incorporated unused content from the first game to speed the process.
Since its release, Mega Man 2 has remained the best selling Mega Man game, with over 1.5 million copies sold. Due to the great reception it received, it has since been released on PlayStation, Microsoft Windows, and as a mobile phone game. Many critics consider Mega Man 2 the best game in the series. However, some expressed disappointment in the difficulty level, stating it is too easy to complete. This reduced level of difficulty made the game more accessible to newer players. The North American release added Normal and Difficult mode selections to allow players the option of playing a more difficult game.
Mega Man 2 solidified the Mega Man franchise. As of December 2017, there are between 41 and 345 Mega Man games. These wide numbers represent the vast criteria that can be used to filter what individuals consider official games (for example, some fans may not consider mobile games, remakes, or games that only released in a single language as
