Introduction
Prayers for All Occasions is a collection of original prayers covering a wide spectrum of subjects and situations. They have emerged from whenever there has been a need to collect together thoughts and hopes in prayer and will suit anyone who leads prayers in public or who is looking for a resource to enrich private devotions. They are all contemporary in style and resonance, being born out of twenty-first-century living and believing. There are biblical echoes, which those with detailed knowledge of the Bible will find enriching and those without will not be hindered by. Some have been written as a response to a particular situation with a particular person or occasion in mind. Some were written because I couldn’t find the words elsewhere to capture what I wanted to express. Some are a personal response to facets of life today. I have not tried to substitute classic prayers, which have stood the test of time, and I have no desire to see them removed from use. As life moves on, though, there is a need to ensure that our praying keeps up with us.
The book is divided into eight sections to provide a loose wrapping for the contents. ‘Through the year’ covers the Christian year from Advent to the Feast of Christ the King. On the way it touches on all of the major milestones with a few additional ones reflecting the society we are in. So there are prayers for Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night, both of which display the starting point of our culture and therefore provide an opportunity for a Christian response. The prayer for ‘Thanksgiving’ points to an international perspective. ‘Church and ministry’ holds the prayers that broadly fall into church use or refer to the Church’s concerns and ministry matters. The doors are opened more widely with ‘Pastoral prayers’, which responds to human living, confronting our mortality and some of the darker aspects of life.
‘Community’ brings together the worlds of education and work, volunteering
