CHAPTER 1
ANOTHER CHILD LOST
I AM DETECTIVE Jacelynn Dacey. I work in the Major Case Unit for the Chicago Police Department. My partner is Detective Willie J. Islay, so named because her dad wanted a boy, and we are good at what we do. Nevertheless, the job can be overwhelming sometimes, and this is the story of how I almost lost myself to this job.
It was autumn, my favorite time of the year, and the sky was light crisp and clear. There were yellow, red, orange, and light golden brown leaves falling to the ground. It was nature at its best, something I had not seen in a long time. It is not easy to find beauty on the south side of this city.
Detective Islay and I arrived on the south side to investigate a missing person report. A 10 year-old boy had gone missing, and as in all such cases, foul play was a possibility. An anonymous caller phoned the Missing Persons Unit today and said, I think something happened to a young boy in my neighborhood. I usually see him walking to school, but not in the past few days. I also saw a strange man hanging out near the school yard, looking suspicious and watching the kids the same day the boy went missing.
My partner and I began our investigation by canvassing the crowd that gathered when we parked to find out if anyone had seen or heard anything strange. Have you seen any strangers hanging around in the area? Have dope sales gotten worst; is there gang fighting over drug turf around here? Have any children been missing in this neighborhood before? Can you tell me anything that might help us find out what happened to this missing boy?
A man from the crowd yelled out, I know that son-of-a-bitch down the street got something to do with the missing kid.
Islay asked, Who are you talking about? Does he live around here? Have you seen him talking to the children in the neighborhood before? What time did you see him? What does he look like, and what kind of clothes was he wearing? Did you see him today? Tell me everything you remember.
He is about 6 feet tall, heavy set, and bald. He was wearing a black jacket and dark pants. We saw that bastard a couple of days ago in front of the school at the end of the block. It was when the kids where getting out of school, and I think it was the last time I saw the missing kid.
Another voice in the crowd yelled out, I think the man’s name is Pervis Jonas. He lives next door to the missing kid. The kid lives with his grandmother at the end of this block. I think the kids in the neighborhood call this dude the Candy Man. You always see him handing out candy to the kids around the school.
Do you know the missing boy’s name?
Willie asked.
He calls himself M.J., after Michael Jordan. He would tell everybody, ‘I want to be like Mike.’ I think his real name is Michael James.
ISLAY AND I BEGAN to search the neighborhood. We went into every backyard on that block looking for anything that might give us a clue to the whereabouts of our missing child. We finally got lucky when we got to Jonas’ house next door to where the boy allegedly lives. I went to the back of this house where I saw small blood droppings leading to his back basement door. At the bottom of the stairwell was a child’s blue book bag. Inside the bag were books and the name Michael James. I had just found the evidence needed to go inside this house, probable cause for a search warrant.
I got the warrant within about 20 minutes and we entered the premises. We went through the upstairs and the occupant’s personal belongings were all about the house and had a sour smell. There was no evidence of a child, but we followed the sour smell to the basement. When I stepped on that first basement stair, my gut feeling was in overdrive.
I moved slowly down the stairs to the basement, my heart pounding. I gripped my gun so tight that it left a mark in the palm of my hand. Willie was right behind me as we looked for the suspect, but he was not there. I saw a freezer in the corner that had stains on the top and handle. I holstered my gun and gloved my hand as I walked to the freezer and opened it carefully.
My hand was shaking as the door to the freezer flew up. At the bottom of the freezer was black trash bags piled on top of each other. I could see that there was something in the bags. As I reached for a bag, Willie touched my shoulder and I jumped.
What the hell is wrong with you?
I asked as I turned to find her laughing. That shit’s not funny.
There is something in here." Willie knew that I was pissed off and edgy about this case because it involved a child, but that did not keep her from getting a laugh at my expense.
I opened one of the bags slowly. There was a small leg inside. Willie, my gut tells me this is the boy we’re looking for. I think that some son of a bitch cut him up into pieces and put him in this freezer.
I found other childlike body parts in the other bags.
Jacelynn, this might be Michael James. It looks like Pervis Jonas may be involved in the murder of this child.
We contacted Sergeant Adams with this evidence. He came to the scene and notified CSI, and they sent out investigators to process the scene. Detective Dacey I want you to stay cool and follow the evidence. Keep this investigation strictly by the books.
Sgt knew how crazy my partner and I could get when children were the victims of a crime.
We left the house and did another search of the perimeter of our suspect’s house. Islay noted that we had found all the body parts but his head. We did not find the head anywhere in or near the house including in the alley.
We walked the alley looking for the boy’s head. Islay, look at this sewer lid. It is slightly off.
Dacey, do you think that prick took the boy down in the sewer and killed him. I do not know, but these lids are always firmly secured. The city does not want the good citizens falling into the sewer and suing them. Let’s get down there and have a look around.
I reached down, took the lid off, and climbed down.
Do you see anything down there Dacey?
my partner called down to me as I reached the bottom of the ladder.
Not yet. I will look around and let you know if I find anything.
I moved carefully through the sewer, shining my flashlight into every crevice. I drew my .357 magnum, thinking that the suspect may be down here and that is why we had not found him yet.
Islay
, I called up toward the manhole opening. I really do not want to find the boy’s head.
Then I spotted a hole in the wall. Willie, get down here I think I found something.
There was a foul odor in the sewer as one would expect, but the stench was much stronger the nearer I got to a hole in the wall. Let’s see what is behind this wall,
I said to Willie when she joined me, shining her flashlight to where mine was aimed.
We looked inside the hole, and there was something lying on the ground behind the wall. I had to dig around the hole to make it large enough to get my hand in the hole. What is it Dacey, the head?
I picked up a burlap bag and handed it to Willie. Damn, Islay it’s a head; I’ll bet that is Michael James. Let’s get this processed right away.
After CSI had collected the evidence and headed for the lab, Sgt Adams told Islay and me to get
