The Life of an Everyday Housewife - Wanda Markham

    A Town called Hurst

In a small town called Hurst my dad bought a house, It was our very first. It was not much, but it had my mother’s touch. My dad’s work had taken us all over the three states. My future had been left up to fate. Now I had friends and an allowance to spend. At the time Hurst was a small town. It was my homeward bound. I was a teenager and was allowed to walk to the only Dairy Kream we had. It was a place where all the kids hung out. And there was always a crowd. I was on all the sport teams, we tried so hard to outwit our opponents team. We lost most of our games, we still tried just the same. This little town called Hurst is no longer small, it has one of the largest malls. It is still home to me. Someday I am going back wait and see. No longer a teenager, no longer a small town, it is where my happiness was found. It is where my family settled down.

    Ashes in the Wind

When I die take my ashes and toss them into the wind so I can go places I have never been. Only then can I reach out and understand people from other lands. Mix my ashes with the blowing wind. My one wish is to help broken hearts mend. Only then can I set my sights on other people’s plight. Life did not pass me by, but none the less not enough time do we ever possess. Toss my ashes to the wind so I will always be by your side my friend. Let me be free and wild in the ways of a child. Let me breath the air I took for granted. Let me soar to other planets. Yes, take my ashes and toss them in the wind so I can be free again.

    Back in town

A friend of mine said you were back in town. I thought I’d go down to the old hang out to see if you might be there as I walked through the door there you sat girls all around just like before. When you saw me you stood up in surprise Although I don’t know why? The girls walked away. As you motioned me to come and stay. They knew we had things to say. It had been a long time since you had done me wrong. Is it possible your love is still strong? I have waited for this for a very long time, you have never left my heart or mind. You were still as handsome as could be. Me, still waiting to see if your love was mine to keep. This time was going to be different. No longer was I going to wait. I know this time was real. From me your love, no one can steal. You stood up took my hand and together we walked out the door. To be with one another for ever more.

    Childhood

On my daily walk I pass a schoolyard full of children playing. I stop and watch how carefree they seem to be. And I remember me. I also was a kid in grade school, l followed the rules. I had no idea what the future would hold, I did not have a clue. I watched them for a while, thinking how nice it was to be a child. I had forgotten. I wished I had taken my time in life walking. Once a childhood is gone, there is no going back. Take small steps growing up, there is no hurry. Leave some tracks, so when you look back, you know you took your time getting there. And you did not know how long it would take or care. I want to tell them, yell, hoop and holler, enjoy your childhood. For in life that is the only thing fun and good. You only get one chance, take more than one glance.

    Class Reunion

I went to my first class reunion not knowing what to expect. I was so excited. We all had the same feelings as each one was greeted. Each one asking who are you? Each one smiling and laughing as if they knew. After a while everyone settled down to eat. The room full of noise. No one was being coy, we were all full of joy. Not many had changed. Just older in looks. We remember how we all had fun and what we wrote in our books. My life line was in school. We all followed the rules. As one girl said, we did not realize just how much fun we were having. That was true. We thought it would go on forever. As for me, time stood still in that old school building. My memories are as clear as the day I made them, about some I am bewildered. There we all stood in this small room, each trying to remember who was whom. By the end of the day we had it all figured out, as we left one by one. Telling each other not to forget to give one another a shout. And we will no doubt. Till our next reunion.

    Clock of Time

As the road of life nears the end 1wonder about some of the turns I took back then. Was there anything
