    Acknowledgments Introspection

In Introspection, Peter Kaufman, gives readers a major volume of poetry concerning the ever changing variety of communication, thinking and philosophy, of all kinds, in human life today, with the assistance of Cynthia Kostylo, an exceptional artist, who adds her illustrative talent to the printed word as she did in Peter's: Agendas and Choices, Autumn Leaves and Other Events, and now Introspection. C P Snow, a great writer, wrote in The Realist, Preface, 1978,'----'a writer's life is not just connected with his work; it cannot be separated from his life.'

    Hourglass

    I cannot love you

    As a young man

For it is today, and sand

    Through my glass

    Has flowed

    So now I go

    At another ardent pace

    That only youth can give

    It's time to glean.

    Nor green, dear, you be

    Poised in sexuality

    At that edge of genesis

    Where all newness grows,

    And grows, and grows

    Until you know

    Our sifted sands

    Make still more levels

    On which we stand

    To love

    And see the stars.

    Tubalcain

    Nascent bonding temper tests

The mettle from which every member

Of a budding duet is formed

    As the blacksmith, Fate,

    Forges trial sculptures

    And shapers imperfect petals

    For passionate blooms

    Which we,

    As lovers, companions,

    Rings of gold,

    Hammer, finish together

    Until the anvil's smooth

    And the hearth turns cold.

    Yesterday's Wind

    'Once upon a time,'

    The fable begins

    Then weaves, spins

    A tale of Princes,

    Knights, Squires:

    Those who dare

    And perform such deeds

    As we call, 'Untrue.

    Simply impossible to do!

    So, cautious, hesitancy bound

    We mistrust our opportunity

    Our cause our goal,

    But then gathering spirit

    Reflecting anew,

    We posit possibilities pondering

    Yet again, again, and again

    But a ship doesn't sail

    With yesterday's wind.'

    Equality

    Who can contest,

    Candidly, with courage

    And not in fear,

    Like those obsessed

    That Loss must always

    Subtract from Gain

    So that nullity exits

    Between plus and blame,

    And triumph

    Is sought

    At any humiliating price;

    By tempering

    Obsession,

    So that every ego

    Might attain

    Some enhancement,

    In the exchange?

    My Architect

    As a Master Designer,

    Dear,

    Please engineer

    Using all your talent

    An edifice of sorts:

    No, not a tower

    Nothing perfect,

    Simply instead,

    Something easy

    Like a pyramid.

    Make it permanent,

    Perpetual

    Never out of date,

    Something quick to create,

    And as you have

    A flair for style,

Use the blue of the Aegean

And the sun of our smiles.
