About this ebook

The purpose of this book is to show the simplicity of a complex God. There is a danger of not seeing what we’re reading because our presumptions have sometimes blinded us, and we don’t have inspiration on the Revelation. It is my hope that this book will be a light unto many pathways. God’s word is meant to come alive in the hearts of men. It is my hope that this book will stir up your pure minds and people learn to be careful HOW they hear and avoid any type of perverted gospel that only causes an “emotional high,” to the neglect of food for the soul. This book will definitely make you think, because it will challenge what you’ve heard and cause you to read in depth as the teaching comes alive. I am eternally grateful that my wife Pamela, before her passing in January 2017, inspired me to get the words out of my head and encouraged me to write this book. Will it cause you to scratch your heads? Probably. . .

Robert C. Brown

Robert C Brown is a graduate of Woodlawn High school in Woodlawn Virginia and Christiansburg Institute in Christiansburg, Virginia. He attended Virginia State University with an interim of 2 years in the Marine Corps, then returned to graduate in 1976 with a degree in Sociology. On his journey of being called into the ministry, he served as founder of the Sociology Newsletter and the United Youth Fellowship. He began as an associate at Cobb Memorial Church in Atlanta Georgia and credits Dr. Ratliff the pastor at that time, for his mentorship by example. Robert C. Brown went on to become pastor of Redmond Creek Baptist Church in Galax Virginia, Zion Hill Baptist Church of Radford Virginia, Macedonia Baptist in Sparta, North Carolina and New Zion Baptist in Rock Hill South Carolina to name a few. Second to his calling to proclaim the Gospel, nothing is more important to him than family. At 74 years of age, he finds that there is still a great necessity to “show yourself approved unto God, a Workman not ashamed RIGHTLY dividing the word of TRUTH.”

    Dedication

April 5, 1980 was the beginning of almost 37 years of heaven on earth for me. That was the day that I married my queen, Pamela (Cox) Brown. I found a good wife. As a Pastor of now 50 years plus, I can look back on my wife growing with me as we both diligently studied the Word, and she became a very gifted and knowledgeable teacher of the Bible.

In our private studies, (in one of my fast-talking moments), she stopped me and said,

Bobby, you need to write a book that we can read because no one is in your head like that!

I was talking about the meaning of scripture verses and the ways we hear and apply them. Some things we say are not how it is written, and many are guilty of private interpretations. Some I believe err unknowingly and others I refer to as know-it-alls. I started the book within the 5-year time frame preceding my wife’s death on January 6, 2017, exactly two weeks before my 70th birthday. She contracted MS in 1985 that eventually led to her being bedridden. As a result of cancer, she also had a mastectomy compounded by diabetes.

People that knew her can assure you I’m 100% truthful when I tell you, through all she went through, Pamela Brown did not complain one time nor allow pity parties. One great woman of faith!

This book is dedicated to the apple of my eye, sugar in my coffee, flavor in my Kool-Aid and most of all, my Queen. Because of Pam Brown, welcome to what’s in my head. It will be necessary for you to read your Bible as you read this book for a spiritual awakening. Pam was a student of the Word as we all should be.

"Study to show THYSELF approved unto God, a WORKMAN that needs not be ashamed, RIGHTLY dividing the WORD OF TRUTH."

    Introduction

Living in a time where knowledge has been on a rapid increase, there has been a famine of hearers of the Word of God. The Word of God is not hidden, but there has been a mixture of what we have been taught traditionally, and the truth of God. We as pastors and leaders have received a mandate from the Lord to rightly divide the Word of Truth and lean not to our understanding as well as approved unto God.

A wise man will hear and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: (Proverbs 3:5).

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV).

God has given the Church a mission and the means to fulfill it (learning of Him). We came to Christ for salvation and after Him for discipleship.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Matthew 11:28,29).

In the 21st century, there are many believers that have not taken the time to become disciples, which in itself, is a deterrent from understanding God’s Word. Let me emphasize, that in no way, do I claim to be an expert in Biblical Studies nor Theology. But I do discipline, to taking time to search the scriptures. Those words in Second Timothy are all that need to be said for the imagination, guided by the Holy Spirit, can supply all the details that are spelled out somewhere in the Old and or New Testament.

No matter how cleverly we may work out our theories, if they don’t agree with the scriptures, they are unacceptable.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Corinthians 2:14)

As important as the knowledge of this Word is, it often creates so much pride that some people are kept from entering into the knowledge of the Lord. The plain duty of the bible teacher, theologian, or believer is to take these doctrines from the muck and the mire into which they have been degraded and exalt them to the place and perspective given in the scriptures.

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it. (Amos 8:11,12).

    The Bible Says What?

Try the Spirit by the Spirit . . . FALSE

    A. Error #1 – Misquoted!

    B. Error #2 – Spirit is singular.

    C. Error #3 – The Spirit has no need to try himself.

Why is it that we take part of a verse to the exclusion of another? What does 1 John 4:1 really say?

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Notice, try the spirits is plural. Time does not allow us to exhaust the many spirits (good and bad), listed in Strong’s Concordance for 1 John 4:6, reveals the two spirits that he is writing about.

We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us, he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Jesus goes into more detail beginning with Matthew 24:5 when he says, Many shall come in my name, saying I am Christ, and shall deceive many. Because of the multiplicity of false prophets, Christians need to be able to discern (try) the Spirit of Truth from the Spirit of error. The second chapter of First John goes into detail about the difference. (This would be a good time to read this passage and resume this book).

With this in mind, consider Revelation 3:1. Jesus is identified as He that hath the seven Spirits of God.

And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou has a name that thou livest, and art dead.

    Isaiah 11:2:

And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

    Romans 8: 9 -16:

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors,
