The Adventures of Zarah - Rachel Megan Cotton
Chapter 1
Zarah stood gazing out across the lush fields in front of her. A silver birch tree forest stood in the distance, disrupting an otherwise endless view. Though half of her hair was braided away from her face, the rest of her long, wispy, dark hair whipped around as the warm breeze blew across the meadow. She was having the most relaxing afternoon—until it was interrupted by a sudden bellow.
Zarah turned and squinted at Ignatius, her pet dragon, giving him her best scolding look before speaking in her most authoritative voice.
Ignatius!
she hollered. Put Mr. Gasque’s cow down. Now!
Sheepish, Ignatius lowered his head but did not let go of the scruff of Bessie’s neck immediately.
Ignaaaatiuuuus…
she warned, now utilizing her menacing voice. She scrunched her face into a scowl to further show him her displeasure. Naughty Dragon!
Ignatius lowered Bessie to the ground, setting her on her feet.
Bessie turned to look up at the oaf of a reptile, snorting with disdain before ambling to the other side of the pasture.
I am so sorry, Mr. Gasque,
Zarah said. It won’t happen again.
Quite alright, your Majesty,
Mr. Gasque replied. We all know Ignatius wants to play.
With a sigh, he added, I just wish he could find a playmate his own size.
As do I,
Zarah said, before glaring at Ignatius, gesturing with two fingers to her eyes to let him know she was still watching him.
Ignatius bared his teeth in a silly grin and wagged his tail, taking out Dolores—another one of Mr. Gasque’s milk cows.
Dolores scrambled back to her feet and scurried far out of the dragon’s way.
Zarah squeezed the bridge of her nose, closed her eyes, and let out a long sigh. Come on, boy. Time to go home.
Home for Zarah and Ignatius was a sizeable castle on a picturesque hill a few miles from town. It was a good day to take a stroll, so instead of climbing onto Lady Licorice—her noble charcoal steed—she held the reigns and walked beside her while Ignatius plodded along on the path behind them.
Ignatius was too large to walk side by side with Zarah anymore. She glanced back at him, remembering him as a pup. When she had first got him, Ignatius had fit into the palm of her hand. She’d cuddle him and stroke his silvery scales or rub his purple belly. She would touch his snout between his eyes until he’d fall asleep; he had been such a sweet baby dragon.
He’d spent a long time living inside the castle with her and they had made many memories together. Sadly, as Ignatius grew, he had become too big for his frilly pink canopied four-post bed that matched her own, or for sitting on Zarah’s lap—much to his chagrin.
The day that he took a running leap onto Zarah—as she sat in her armchair reading the Sunday funnies in front of the fireplace—was the day she commissioned a dragon-sized kennel out in the courtyard. After she had caught her breath, of course. She ordered frilly pink curtains to be made out of his old canopy to help ease his transition to his new ‘room.’
She walked a few moments in silence before glancing over at Lady Licorice with a sly grin. How about another adventure, Lady?
Lady Licorice whinnied in approval.
"Good, it’s settled then! We’ll set out in a couple of days. It’s been too long since we’ve had a quest. A good three weeks, at least!" Zarah was starting to get excited now. She had a wanderlust and thrived when there were adventures to be had, mysteries to be solved, and experiences to be made.
Ignatius needs a friend his own size,
Zarah explained. "And we are going to find him one!"
Lady Licorice snorted in agreement and then glanced at her sideways, as if to ask "But what will your father say about this? Hmmmm?"
Don’t worry, Lady,
said Zarah. King Eerik won’t object. I’ll speak to him as soon as we get home. Daddy is a reasonable person. He’ll see this is as a noble—and necessary—venture.
Chapter 2
King Eerik was a kind, but strict ruler. He didn’t care much for frivolous clothing, and he tended to dress in modest black or brown attire. He didn’t have patience for frills and gold; he saved those types of garments for special state affairs. He had dark, curly hair and liked to keep his hair short—less muss and fuss that way.
Eerik looked up to see his daughter, Princess Zarah, walking into his study. No, not walking—bouncing.
She looks much too cheerful, he thought as he squinted at her.
The king supposed he was biased, but he knew no one would disagree with him that Zarah was the prettiest princess in the kingdoms. Suitors came from far away to request the honor of courting her, though Zarah had no interest in being courted.
Eerik was pleased by this; not that he’d let her know it.
Zarah brushed her dark, wispy hair out of her face, showing off her equally dark, shining eyes.
Good afternoon, Daddy!
Zarah sung cheerfully as she approached the king, who was sitting at his desk.
Eerik groaned. You’re about to ask for something, aren’t you?
As a matter of fact…
Zarah looked at him with patience.
The king groaned again. Well, what is it then? Get on with it.
I would, if you wouldn’t interrupt, Daddy,
she said with a smile. She came around his desk and gave him a hug around his neck and pecked a kiss onto his cheek.
He glanced at her out of the corner of his eyes; he was suspicious.
She held her arms around his neck and leaned over his shoulder, grinning at him.
He let out a defeated sigh. He knew he’d likely give in to whatever whim she had this time—though he steeled his resolve to fight a valiant battle before giving in to his sweet, adorable daughter.
Well, what is it?
he asked again.
I went for a lovely walk this morning with Lady and Ignatius…
Mmm hmmm,
the king said, being cautious.
"We went to visit Farmer Gasque… You know, Mr. Gasque really is a lovely man—keeps such a nice, tidy farm… You should see it sometime, Daddy. Even the pigs keep their sty spotless… Though, I suppose you can’t call it a sty if it’s not filthy, can
